Shoaib and Tanvir not in World Twenty20 squad

Injured fast bowler Sohail Tanvir and Shoaib Akhtar have not been included in the 30-man squad

Cricinfo staff26-Feb-2010Except for the omission of fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar, there were no major surprises in Pakistan’s preliminary 30-man squad for the defence of their World Twenty20 title in the Caribbean in two months’ time. Injured fast bowler Sohail Tanvir, who has not played any cricket since November, was also overlooked.Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman, said Shoaib had been overlooked because he had hardly played any cricket in the past ten months. Though Shoaib has only taken part in a couple of List A matches since the series against Australia in UAE last May, he had said last week that he was still confident of making an international comeback. He will lead Islamabad Leopards in the upcoming RBS Twenty20 Cup.Butt said Tanvir would undergo knee surgery in Australia. “The doctors are not sure when he will regain the fitness,” he told .Another fast bowler who was missing from the probables was Mohammad Talha, who had been part of the squad for the two Twenty20s against England last weekend. The PCB also announced a list of 30 probables for the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 which will run parallel to the men’s tournament in the West Indies.Men’s squad: Imran Nazir, Imran Farhat, Khalid Latif, Mohammad Hafeez, Salman Butt, Shahzaib Hassan, Shoaib Malik, Umar Akmal, Naveed Yasin, Hasan Raza, Kamran Younis, Misbah-ul-Haq, Babar Azam, Fawad Alam, Abdul Razzaq, Shahid Afridi, Yasir Arafat, Hammad Azam, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, Umar Gul, Mohammad Aamer, Mohammad Asif, Wahab Riaz, Mohammad Sami, Saeed Ajmal, Raza Hasan, Abdul Rehman, Kamran Akmal, Sarfraz Ahmed, Zulqarnain Haider.Women’s squad: Sana Mir, Bismah Maroof, Nain Abidi, Sajjida Shah, Javeria Khan, Almas Akram, Nida Dar, Zeba Manzoor, Kainat Imtiaz, Faryal Awan, Armaan Khan, Sumaiya Siddiqi, Urooj Mumtaz, Nazia Sadiq, Sabeen Abdul Samad, Masooma Junaid, Qanita Jalil, Sadia Yousuf, Sania Khan, Marina Iqbal, Sana Gulzar, Ayesha Qazi, Sukhan Faiz, Rabia Batool, Saima Jamil, Batool Fatima, Asmavia Iqbal, Rabia Shah, Sidra Amin, Sidra Nawaz.

But despite the sparse crowds and complaints about the floodlights, this Asia Cup has thrown up a considerable amount of entertainment, offered largely by the contender knocked out after two close defeats. While Bangladesh continue to provide further ammunition to their critics with dispiriting performances, Pakistan, recovering from another period of adversity, have fought hard. Shahid Afridi lit up the opener with a stunning century against Sri Lanka, and the nail-biter against India on Saturday reaffirmed the rivalry as among cricket’s most exhilarating. Alex Crook drops Digne/West Ham update

West Ham United have been dealt a setback in their bid to bring Lucas Digne to the London Stadium in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook, who stated in a recent post on Twitter that, despite the left-back appearing to be close to leaving Everton this month, the 28-year-old’s wage demands are believed to be an issue in West Ham’s move for the defender.

In his tweet, Crook said: “Digne edging closer to EFC exit… wage demands are an issue for WHUFC.”

Fans will be fuming

Considering just how impressive Digne has been since his £18m move to Everton back in 2018, the news that West Ham could be set to miss out on a deal for the left-back as a result of his wage demands is sure to leave the London Stadium faithful fuming.

Indeed, the £27m-rated Frenchman has been a continual threat for the Toffees since joining the club, scoring four goals, registering four assists and creating a whopping 13 big chances over his 35 Premier League appearances back in 2018/19. Those returns earned him an excellent seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.33 in his debut campaign with the Blues.

The £110k-per-week defender has subsequently followed up these returns by providing seven assists, creating eight big chances and averaging a SofaScore match rating of 7.15 over his 35 league outings in 2019/20; before registering seven assists, creating 11 big chances and averaging a SofaScore match rating of 7.13 over his 30 Premier League fixtures last term.

As such, it is clear to see that the 28-year-old would make a fantastic addition to David Moyes’ options on the left-hand side of his defence at the London Stadium, especially for a reported transfer fee of just £30m.

Also, when taking into account that the Hammers are currently paying the ineffective Andriy Yarmolenko a princely £115k-per-week, surely it would be well worth affording the Frenchman parity with this salary considering his remarkable returns from left-back so far in his Premier League career.

Vieira must sell Benteke to sign Nketiah

Crystal Palace have been enjoying a great start to their season so far, with the side signing a number of young players who have been important to their good form in the Premier League, and the good business could continue into the January transfer window if Patrick Vieira can make an important decision.

What’s the word?

According to MailOnline, Burnley are interested in signing Christian Benteke from Crystal Palace to replace Chris Wood, who left the club this week to join Newcastle United, leaving Sean Dyche’s side in a weak position whilst battling relegation this season.

The report suggests that Burnley have made an enquiry for the Palace striker and the South London club are open to selling Benteke during January, but are only interested in a fee of between £10m-£12m.

Vieira must axe Benteke to sign Nketiah

The Eagles have been strongly linked to signing Eddie Nketiah from Arsenal this month, but with Mikel Arteta trying to squash the rumours by insisting he will stay with him at the Emirates, the move could be set back until the summer when the 22-year-old will be out of contract unless Palace are in a position to offer a high bid for the striker.

They could discover the money to do exactly that by axing Benteke before the window closes.

The £120k-per-week Palace forward has been subject to his fair share of criticism over his time at the club with former Eagles midfielder, John Salako, claiming Benteke “can’t do anything” back in 2019:

“I really feel for the lad to a point because he just can’t do it. It’s like he’s got his boots on the wrong feet. He just can’t do anything right; it’s amazing.”

Benteke has been a loyal player to Palace with 37 goals and 12 assists in 168 appearances, but at 32-years-old, it could be the perfect opportunity for Vieira to move him on and inject further youth into the squad, developing the future of the team by giving more opportunity to the likes of Michael Olise and using the money made on the sale to Burnley to purchase a young striker in Nketiah.

The Clarets will surely be keen to sign a striker as soon as possible to boost their chances of survival after losing Wood, so the French manager must make an important decision quickly on whether he cashes in on Benteke or not.

Everton linked with Brennan Johnson

Having only managed to win one of their previous 11 Premier League games, the upcoming January transfer window could give Everton the chance to strengthen their squad and put them in a good shape to put their poor run of form behind them and attack the second half of the campaign.

One player that could come in next month and revitalise Rafa Benitez’s side is 20-year-old attacking-midfielder Brennan Johnson, who Everton are reportedly interested in signing from Championship club Nottingham Forest alongside Newcastle United and West Ham United.

As a product of Forest’s youth system, Johnson made his senior debut for the club back in August 2019 under former manager Sabri Lamouchi in a 2-1 defeat against West Bromwich Albion.

Labelled as an “unbelievable” player in the past by Lamouchi, Johnson has made 31 appearances for Forest across all competitions.

In September last year, Johnson joined Lincoln City in what ended up being a very successful loan deal where he managed to score 13 goals and provide 14 assists in 48 appearances in total.

This season has seen the youngster rack up five goals and four assists for Forest in 23 Championship appearances, taking his tally to 18 senior strikes. He’s also played across a number of different midfield and attacking positions, highlighting his versatility and talent in front of goal, which is probably why he has caught the interest of the likes of Everton, West Ham and Newcastle.

In terms of a potential move to Everton in January, with James Rodriguez having left the club in September, Johnson could be the ideal replacement for the Colombian as a versatile attacking-midfield player given how Rodriguez managed to score six goals and provide nine assists during his brief stint at Goodison Park.

Although, given Johnson’s young age, it could be safe to assume that he could be at Everton for a lot longer than Rodriguez was if he manages to impress Benitez if he does join in January.

Moving forward, Everton should definitely do all they can to sign Johnson in January.

As an exciting young prospect, he could flourish at the Merseyside club in the Premier League and bring some positive vibes in a similar way Demarai Gray has by scoring five goals and providing two assists in 16 Premier League games this term.

PCB sets 30-day appeal period for punished players

The Pakistan Cricket Board has given the seven players, who were punished with bans and fines in the aftermath of the disastrous Australia tour, 30 days to appeal against the sanctions imposed on them

Cricinfo staff17-Mar-2010The Pakistan Cricket Board has given the seven players, who were punished with bans and fines in the aftermath of the disastrous Australia tour, 30 days to appeal against the sanctions imposed on them.”We have sent all the seven players letters in which we have mentioned the reasons for their punishments and the players can now appeal under the PCB constitution,” Wasim Bari, the chief operating officer of the PCB, told AFP. “They can file appeals within 30 days.”Seven senior players were punished by the PCB last week following an inquiry committee report into the team’s poor performance in Australia where they lost all their matches. Younis Khan, Mohammad Yousuf, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan and Shoaib Malik were handed bans, while the Akmal brothers and Shahid Afridi were fined.Bari had headed the six-member committee that investigated and recommended punishments to the players. “We held a thorough inquiry and took into consideration all the facts and background and made decisions to solve the problems in Pakistan cricket,” Bari said. The PCB has named three judges to hear the appeals. “The PCB governing board has appointed two retired Supreme court judges – Muneer Sheikh and Jamshed Ali Shah – and a former high court judge, Irfan Qadir, who will deal with appeals,” said Taffazul Rizvi, PCB’s legal advisor.None of the players has spoken publicly about their punishment or indicated they will appeal.

Sahil Dutta16-Apr-2010Canada have pulled out of hosting the 2012 Under-19 World Cup after admitting they wouldn’t be able to supply the required number of venues for the event. The move doesn’t come as a huge surprise following the recent reports from Canada over the problems with various grounds and Cricket Canada wanted to make sure the ICC would have enough time to rearrange the tournament.”It’s very disappointing but it was simply a case of coming too soon,” Ravin Moorthy, Cricket Canada’s vice president told Cricinfo. “We wanted to make sure we’d give the ICC enough time to rearrange if we couldn’t get the infrastructure ready, so we committed to April 2010 and we’re not quite there.”Last month the former Cricket Canada CEO, Atul Ahuja, hit out at the preparations in a wide-ranging letter which slammed the administration. “The ICC had installed 10 turf wickets for the ICC Trophy in 2001,” he said. “Currently, none of those are operational.”Moorthy, however, hit back at these claims and was at pains to point out that the pitches were not the issue. “We have 10 turf pitches, that’s no problem for us. What we don’t have is the other infrastructure – the pavilions and so on,” he said. “We calculated we’d need between $2 to $2.5 million, and at this we’ve still got some way to go.”It is a blow to cricket in Canada but Moorthy remains confident that the long-term development of the game is still in good order and is hopeful of securing enough funding to stage future events.”We are in regular contact with government and things are going fairly well. Cricket is very important to the social fabric of the South Asian community in Canada and funders understand that. We should be in a position to host these types of global tournaments soon.”In January the Canada board told Cricinfo it was confident of bringing facilities up to standard in time, but conceded defeat earlier this month when they wrote to ICC.”We are grateful to Cricket Canada for making what we recognise will have been a very difficult decision but their realistic and responsible approach allows ICC the time to find a suitable alternative venue,” said ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat.ICC will discuss possible alternative venues during the boarding meeting in Dubai on April 19 and 20.

Newcastle transfer news on Trippier

Eddie Howe is reportedly now targeting a record Newcastle United move for Kieran Trippier in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Will not go away…

The possibility of Trippier moving to St. James’ Park is simply one rumour that will not go away.

The Daily Mirror reported last month that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s (KSA) Public Investment Fund (PIF) believe that they can tempt him back to the Premier League in January, while The Northern Echo have recently claimed that the North East club are hopeful that they can persuade him to leave Atletico Madrid given the emergence of Marcos Llorente in his right-back position.

Nonetheless, given that he played under Howe while they were both at Burnley, a potential move does make a lot of sense.

The Latest: Howe’s top target

As per 90min, Trippier is now Howe’s ‘top target’, after sources revealed that he ‘remains keen’ on a move back to the English top flight, after a move to Manchester United last summer fell through.

However, it will take ‘some persuading’ for him to move to Tyneside, and so the new owners will offer him the biggest contract in the club’s history, worth £150,000-per-week, far more than the £82,000-a-week that he is currently earning in La Liga.

The Magpies would also likely have to pay a club-record transfer fee, or very close to it, in order to sign him next month.

The Verdict: Expensive, but worth it

There is no doubt that bringing in Trippier would be expensive, and could be questioned given that he is 31 years of age now.

However, money should be no object to the mega-rich consortium, and he would offer so much of the valuable experience needed to pull themselves out of the drop zone.

Described as a ‘warrior’ by England manager Gareth Southgate back in June, Trippier was a won the La Liga title last season ahead of the likes of Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, and has so much knowledge and know-how that can be passed down to the squad.

Howe and Trippier also have a good relationship dating back to their time with the Clarets, as Howe once claimed that he is ‘one of the best crossers of the ball’ that he has ever worked with (The Bournemouth Echo), while Trippier in turn has claimed that Howe is a ‘great manager’ and has expressed his admiration for helping him personally (The Burnley Express).

Nonetheless, bringing Trippier to the Toon to work with him could well be a match made in heaven.

West Ham eyeing Mitrovic move

As per reliable club insider ExWHUemployee, via The West Ham Way website, an update has dropped on the club’s links to Fulham star striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.

The Lowdown: Newman set for first January window…

Back in October, West Ham confirmed a new era of transfers at the London Stadium with the club appointing former chief Man City scout Rob Newman in their new head of recruitment role (whufc.com).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Hammers chief, set for his first transfer window in the capital, is tasked with helping manager David Moyes identify and bring in the perfect transfer targets to bolster his squad.

A striker has been on the agenda for quite some time, while more recently, West Ham have been tipped to swoop for a new centre-half after serious injuries to both Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna.

Sharing the latest on their forward hunt, Ex has some news on who Newman is now targeting ahead of next month.

The Latest: Ex shares Mitrovic update…

According to the insider’s information, West Ham, and by extension Newman, are now eyeing a move for Cottagers forward Mitrovic ahead of the January transfer window as he enjoys another fine season in the Championship.

The Serbia international is apparently back on the Irons’ transfer radar with the club having already watched him for many years.

The Verdict: Ideal candidate?

As West Ham fans eagerly await who could finally end their year-long search for an alternative centre-forward, we believe Mitrovic comes with pros and cons.

The 69-cap ace is currently standing out yet again in England’s second tier with a brilliant 22-goal haul in just 21 appearances so far (Transfermarkt), evidently demonstrating he is a prolific goal scorer.

Former Premier League boss Ian Holloway is certainly an admirer, telling EFL on Quest that Mitrovic can be ‘unplayable’, while ex-Norwich City manager Alex Neil labelled the player a ‘beast’.

His top-flight record is slightly more underwhelming, however, with the 27-year-old scoring just three over his last full season in the big time (WhoScored).
