Drenthe, Klaassen & Everton's worst signings of all time

The Toffees suffered a disastrous transfer window last summer, but it is not the first time they have forked out for duds over the years…

When a supporter feels the need to invade the pitch to tell you just how badly you have been performing, you know that the writing is on the wall!

That was the case for Nyarko, who having made 33 appearances across four seasons after signing from Lens for £4.5 million, was told in no uncertain terms by a travelling fan during a trip to Highbury that he was no longer welcome.

Needless to say he never made another Toffees appearance.

While Everton were able to sign the Dane on a free transfer from Nurnberg, much was expected from the full-back under David Moyes.

He struggled with injuries and form throughout his debut campaign, though he did end up playing in the 2009 FA Cup final defeat to Chelsea.

Remarkably Moyes was keen to hang onto him, but he eventually left for Blackburn after just one season on Merseyside.

Signed for £6 million from Southampton and reportedly nearing a regular place in the England squad, Beattie never came close to living up to his potential at Goodison.

He did make 86 appearances across three seasons at Everton, but he was rarely a starter.

Signed for £3.3 million from Tranmere Rovers, Simonsen was the most expensive British goalkeeper ever when he moved to Goodison Park.

He failed to make an appearance during his first season, however, and was eventually released in 2004 having played just 35 times in six years at the club.

White’s partnership of 90 runs for the fourth wicket with Hussey, which came at a brisk clip of almost seven an over, set the base for Victoria’s reply and they went into the last 10 overs needing 66.The wickets of Marcus Stoinis and Peter Handscomb did not affect Victoria too much in the final overs as John Hastings and White kept pace with the equation. Hastings took 18 in an over off Chadd Sayers, before White ended the game in the 49th over, bringing up the win and his eighth List A hundred with a brace of fours.Earlier, fifties from Travis Head, Alex Ross and Johan Botha, and a 35-ball 49 from Tim Ludeman lifted South Australia to 8 for 299. Head, Ross and Botha shared a string of 50+ plus partnerships in the middle overs, before Ludeman provided a lift towards the end, smacking 17 runs in the last over. Hastings was the most successful bowler for Victoria, taking 3 for 37 in his 10 overs.

Kabir Khan quits as Afghanistan coach

Kabir Khan, the former Pakistan fast bowler, has quit as coach of the Afghanistan national side citing personal reasons, but has said he could continue to help the team in another capacity

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Sep-2014Former Pakistan fast bowler Kabir Khan has resigned as coach of the Afghanistan national side stating that the job had taken a toll on his family life. However, he has said he could continue to help the team in another capacity.Kabir said he had decided to resign after constant travel had affected his family life. Kabir had stated that he wanted to quit after the World T20 in March this year but had agreed to stay on for a short period after a request from the Afghanistan Cricket Board.”I have resigned from the coach’s post,” Kabir told AFP. “The simple reason is that my family was suffering from my being away on tours and I was not enjoying coaching. I had informed them [Afghanistan Cricket Board] a month ago but we reached the agreement a few days back and they accepted my stance.”Kabir’s second stint as Afghanistan coach – he was earlier the coach from 2008 to 2010 – began in December 2011 and his three-year contract was due to run out this year. In his first assignment with Afghanistan, he guided the side from the lowest division of the World Cricket League to ODI status in 2009 and a maiden World T20 appearance in 2010.Following a disagreement with the Afghanistan Cricket Board, Kabir quit as coach in 2010, after which he was appointed coach of the United Arab Emirates team. He returned to coach the Afghanistan side in December 2011, and after his return, Afghanistan qualified for the World T20 in 2012. In 2013, Afghanistan beat Kenya and finished second in the World Cricket League Championship, sealing a place in the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, their maiden appearance in the tournament.Prior to the 2015 World Cup, Afghanistan are scheduled to participate in the Asian Games, which start later this month, followed by a familiarisation tour of Australia organised by the ICC, where they will play a series of matches against local sides. They will also play the Asian Cricket Council Championship later in the year.Kabir was confident his absence would not affect the team too much during the World Cup: “I think qualifying for the World Cup was more important than playing it so I don’t think my not being there will affect the performance.”

Mohammad Isam15-Feb-2014Mushfiqur Rahim will captain the Bangladesh team in the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka after missing the two Twenty20s due to a finger injury. The other major change in the 15-member squad is the inclusion of Arafat Sunny as replacement for another left-arm spinner, the injured Abdur Razzak.Razzak, the leading wicket-taker for Bangladesh in ODIs, injured his left hamstring during the first innings of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Chittagong two weeks ago, and still needs time to recover.Sunny made his T20 debut for Bangladesh in the first game against Sri Lanka in Chittagong, and picked up three wickets. He was the most successful spinner in last season’s Dhaka Premier Division, the country’s List-A competition, with 29 wickets at an average of 19.13. The onus of filling the void in the spin attack in the series will also rest on Shakib Al Hasan and Sohag Gazi.Anamul Haque, Naeem Islam and Shafiul Islam have also retained their places in the team despite not being a part of Test plans.
