Celtic: Hoops make Sacha Boey bid

Celtic have now made a bid for Rennes right-back Sacha Boey, according to The Glasgow Evening Times.

Celtic have been linked with another Rennes right-back in Brandon Soppy prior to the rumours regarding Boey.

Fabrizio Romano claimed that the Hoops opened talks over a move for Soppy, who is valued at £6.3m by Transfermarkt.

The transfer expert once again mentioned Soppy when he shared the Hoops’ move for centre-back Carl Starfelt, but it seems as if they have now made an offer for Boey.

Either way, it is clear they are desperate for a new right-back.

The Latest: Boey bid

According to The Glasgow Evening Times, Celtic have made an offer in the region of £1m for Boey.

The 5ft 8 full-back, valued at £2.2m by Transfermarkt, has 12 months remaining on his deal.

Boey spent last season on loan at Dijon and is on just £1,600-a-week, with discussions underway between Rennes and the Hoops over a deal.

The Verdict: Sign both?

At first glance, it appears as if the Hoops have possibly looked at Boey as an alternative to Soppy. However, with Celtic having just Anthony Ralston as their only senior right-back, it may well be a case of signing both over just one, especially after a cut-price bid for Boey.

Boey, who is just 20 years of age, could represent a good piece of business from the Hoops, should they be successful with a £1m offer.

He already has 32 Ligue 1 appearances under his belt, can play as a right-back or a left-back and is a France Under-20 international. All promising signs, and hopefully a right-back will arrive in Scotland relatively soon, or possibly even two if these reports are anything to go by.

In other news: Celtic source claims Hoops have now finalised fourth summer signing after midfielder development.

Mauricio Pochettino confirms Thiago Silva & Carney Chukwuemeka setbacks in double Chelsea injury blow – but reveals Robert Sanchez is ready to return after two months out

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Blues manager Pochettino revealed a mixed bag when it came to his players' fitness, with the Argentine ruling out Silva and Carney Chukwuemeka for the clash against Pep Guardiola's men. However, goalkeeper Sanchez is available after a lengthy knee injury, and Levi Colwill and Malo Gusto are in contention as well, ahead of Saturday's trip to the Etihad.

    WHAT POCHETTINO SAID

The former Tottenham manager told reporters on Friday: "[Thiago Silva has a] Minor injury, but he is not available. We need to assess day by day.

"[Gusto and Colwill] are OK. They recovered well. Both available. Robert Sanchez is available. Carney Chukwuemeka twisted his ankle two days ago. He is out.

"[Sanchez's return] is a good thing for the team. You will see [the selection between him and Petrovic]. It's very good to be back. It's better to have all the players available."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

While Chelsea are still without key personnel in Reece James and Wesley Fofana, their injury list has began to shrink during a season where they have had a hefty absentee list. However, Silva's injury gives Pochettino a selection conundrum in defence, but Sanchez's return in goal is a more positive dilemma – even if Djordje Petrovic has largely been reliable between the sticks in the Spaniard's absence.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The prolific Notts County striker threatened to be a serious thorn in Wrexham’s side last season as a thrilling promotion race unfolded in the National League. Langstaff hit 41 league goals for his side, pipping 38-goal Paul Mullin to the Golden Boot, and netted a match-winning effort when County played host to the Red Dragons.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Wrexham would get their revenge later in the season at SToK Racecourse, but Langstaff’s efforts were impossible to ignore. Reynolds and McElhenney were certainly aware of him, with the pair telling the Welcome to Wrexham documentary as title rivals refused to go away: “Macaulay Langstaff, he can f*ck off.” Reynolds reacted to McElhenney’s joke by adding: “Yeah, God that guy is good. He's handsome as f*ck. He looks like he could be in Peaky Blinders.”

  • WHAT THEY SAID

Langstaff has not seen the episode in which he starred, but has told of being made aware of comments from two Hollywood superstars: “When Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are calling you handsome and saying you should be on Peaky Blinders, how can you not be complimented by that! It was brilliant. I haven’t actually watched the documentary, I don’t think I can watch it because of what happened last year – obviously losing out to them in the end. I don’t think I can bring myself to watch it, but I’ve obviously been sent the video by numerous people and when I saw it, it was really funny. It looks like a good documentary. It looks like it’s really light-hearted, so really enjoyed that 20-second clip of me!”

USMNT's Malik Tillman gets an assist, but PSV have it all to do! Dutch side drops points in Champions League draw with Lens

  • Tillman credited with assist

  • Pepi comes on late

Both Tillman and Sergino Dest started the match for PSV, who seized the lead only to give it right back in an eventual 1-1 draw. With the draw, PSV now face an uphill battle to get out of the group, having earned just two points in three games.

The final member of the USMNT trio, Ricardo Pepi, came on in the 90th minute, but was unable to help PSV steal a result late on.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Following a fairly tepid first half, PSV seized the lead 10 minutes into the second half behind a breathtaking finish from Johan Bakayoko. Tillman was credited with the assist, having been the player responsible for laying the ball off to Bakayoko before his fantastic curled finish.

Just 10 minutes later, though, Lens wrestled back a goal of their own, as striker Elye Wahi slid to tap home a fantastic Przemyslaw Frankowski cross to make it 1-1.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

With the draw, PSV will have an uphill battle to qualify out of Group B as we reach the halfway point of the group stage.

The Dutch club now has just two points through three games, leaving them level with Sevilla for last in the group. The Spanish side does, however, have a three-goal advantage in the goal difference department.

Lens, with the draw, sits second with five points while Arsenal's win over Sevilla saw the Gunners jump to the top spot midway through this group stage.

  • Getty

    USMNT IMPACT

The U.S. will be glad to see Tillman healthy, fit and contributing, especially if the team is to continue on in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

It looks like they will, given Tyler Adams' injury, making Tillman and Gio Reyna the primary candidates to join the midfield unit. When healthy, that spot will go to Reyna, but counting on Reyna's fitness has been a tough one for the U.S. through the past two years.

As for Dest, his continued minutes are helpful for a player who has struggled for those in recent years. Pepi, meanwhile, remains a slow burn at PSV as he continues to serve as Luuk de Jong's primary backup.

    GOAL'S RATINGS

    Sergino Dest (6/10):

Started at left-back again, but he just doesn't look as comfortable on that side as he does on the right. An okay game, but nothing spectacular.

    Malik Tillman (7/10):

The assist will boost his rating but, let's be honest, he didn't do too much to make that goal happen! Outside of that moment, though, he wasn't too influential as he had just 29 touches in 71 minutes.

    Ricardo Pepi (N/A):

Came on late and earned a yellow card immediately, but didn't have any real time to work.

Nuno clear he wants to join Tottenham

According to Football Insider, a Tottenham Hotspur source has told the outlet that former Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Nuno Espirito Santo has ‘made it clear’ he is keen on taking the job in north London.

The Lowdown: Spurs eyeing Nuno…

Tottenham fans have watched a host of different managers come in and out of the frame since the Lilywhites opted to sack former boss Jose Mourinho in late April.

Indeed, the likes of Julian Nagelsmann and Brendan Rodgers were touted as early frontrunners only for Spurs to move and hold talks with Mauricio Pochettino, Antonio Conte, Paulo Fonseca and Gennaro Gattuso in that order (BBC).

Now another coach appears to be in pole position for the role at Tottenham in Nuno, who guided ex-club Wolves to Premier League promotion.

The Latest: Nuno has ‘made it clear’ he wants to join…

As per a Lilywhites source speaking to Football Insider, the 47-year-old has now ‘made it clear’ he is ‘keen on taking the post’ at Tottenham with discussions going well during the subsequent period.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-2/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

There is apparently a ‘growing confidence’ among both parties that a deal can be finalised for his appointment and he could even be appointed the club’s new manager by the end of this weekend.

Nuno and Spurs have also agreed salary terms with only a few issues left to be ironed out, namely the makeup of his possible backroom staff.

The Verdict: Coup for Tottenham?

This comes as a pretty big development in the Tottenham manager hunt and one that could see their long search for a Mourinho heir finally reach it’s conclusion, but is Nuno the right man?

He doesn’t exactly fit chairman Daniel Levy’s original requirements for a free-flowing, attacking-minded coach – as outlined in his end of season letter to supporters.

Nuno does meet the standard when it comes to nurturing young talent and developing players, though, which is said to be another major pull for the role when it comes to Levy (football.london).

Lauded as a ‘genius’ by Matt Murray (This is Futbol), the Portuguese certainly has his credentials, like guiding Wolves to successive seventh-placed Premier League finishes and the Europa League quarter-finals before his underwhelming final year at Molineux (BBC).

He comes as a pretty mixed bag but could maybe steady the ship, with new managing director Fabio Paratici said to be a big admirer.

West Ham plot Tarkowski swoop

Speaking to Football Insider, in reaction to news that West Ham United are now eyeing Burnley defender James Tarkowski, Kevin Campbell has dropped a rather positive verdict.

The Lowdown: Irons want new centre-half…

As explained by club insider Claret & Hugh, West Ham United are on the hunt for a capable defender who can reinforce their backline as manager David Moyes sets out three transfer priorities for this summer.

Indeed, it is reported that he wants a new centre-back as well as a world class centre-forward – with a permanent deal for 2020/2021 loan sensation Jesse Lingard also on the agenda (C&H).

Football Insider revealed recently that West Ham have registered their interest in signing Tarkowski this summer and it is believed that he is ‘very keen’ to join the club.

The Latest: Campbell drops excited reaction…

Speaking to Football Insider, in reaction to the development, Premier League pundit Campbell has dropped an excited reaction and believes it is on the cards.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest/” title=”West Ham latest!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

“I think that one is probably set in stone,” he explained.

“Moyes will strengthen that West Ham backline. He knows if he wants to stay up in those European spaces that he needs to get his defence right.

“I think it was the defence which let them down towards the end of last season because in a number of games they were free-scoring. They look fantastic in attack but they conceded silly goals in big moments. The Arsenal game is a prime example.

“Tarkowski would be a great signing and I think the time has come for him to leave Burnley. He would be a stabilising force back there for West Ham.”

The Verdict: Time is now?

West Ham arguably do need a new defender, especially with Fabian Balbuena set to depart the club on June 30, and Tarkowski could finally be attainable this summer.

Burnley rejected numerous bids from the Irons last year for him but a complicated situation in Lancashire may present West Ham with an opportunity.

The 28-year-old’s desire to leave Turf Moor this summer and the fact Tarkowski only has one year remaining on his current deal could now open the door for West Ham to make a move.

The Clarets could arguably be forced to sell at a cut price given his contract situation and West Ham should certainly pounce if that becomes the case.

Of course, in terms of price, they will also need to be cunning in a difficult market with other targets in mind.

Joao Felix's 'dream' is coming true! Barcelona proving perfect for Portuguese playmaker to rebuild his career

The Atletico Madrid loanee pushed for a move to Catalunya all summer long, and he couldn't have asked for a better start to life with the Blaugrana

The stats speak for themselves. Robert Lewandowski spent the first four games of Barcelona's campaign on an island. He was, by his standard, starved of chances, forced to move into the wrong areas. Lewandowski did not get the ball enough, so Lewandowski could not do Lewandowski things.

But last Sunday, that changed. Lewandowski, who was involved in three of Barca's five goals against Real Betis, had a partner in the final third, a buzzing creative presence that offered everything he needed. That player, once the second-most expensive teenager in the world, and subsequent Chelsea reject, was Joao Felix. He has wanted a Barcelona move for some time now, having admitted in July that Barca would be his "dream" destination were to get his wish and leave Atletico Madrid.

How, exactly, it would all work, though, was up for debate. Barcelona were a rather rigid side last year, and didn't seem to have room for a mercurial attacking talent, a player who has historically had limited interest in concepts of 'defending' and 'off-ball work.' On Sunday, though, Felix ran the show as the Blaugrana battered Betis, scoring once and orchestrating a rampant attack.

He was at it again on Tuesday, too, getting on the scoresheet twice and assisting Lewandowski yet again, pulling the strings in a performance against Antwerp that suggested Barca's Champions League blues might just fade this year.

These may be early days, and the opponents may have rolled over, but this "dream" transfer might just be a stroke of magic for both parties.

    Misery in Madrid

Felix's move from Benfica to Atletico Madrid in 2019 for a €126 million (£111m/$143m) fee made little sense. He was an imperfect fit, the kind of weightless but skilful attacking midfielder that Diego Simeone loved to beat rather than having in his own team. But Atleti were flush with cash, having been handed a ridiculous €120m (£107m/$134m) by Barcelona after they paid Antoine Griezmann's release clause in what, ironically, was also another immensely unsuccessful piece of business.

So, Felix was the panic buy, a team that looked at its lack of attacking talent and decided to buy the most attacking, most expensive option out there. It certainly helped that plenty of other clubs were after Felix — and the midfielder himself admitted that the Metropolitano offered "the best conditions to progress." But this was always something of a questionable signing.

So it proved to be. Felix scored 34 goals and added 16 assists across four years at Atletico — he was too good not to contribute — but never really became a crucial first-team player for Simeone. He was often benched for big games, and publicly disagreed with his manager. Simeone, meanwhile, used the media to question the player's commitment. Felix never really took the criticism well, and ended up languishing on the sidelines while inferior talents took to the pitch ahead of him. The detractors, it seemed, were right.

    Lengthy saga after loan struggles

It was clear, in the 57th minute of Felix's Chelsea debut, that the forward was never really going to work. He might even have been cursed. The tackle that saw him sent off against Fulham was something of an unlucky one. Here was a player, in effect, trying too hard, throwing his legs at an opponent in frustration. He could have no complaints when David Coote gave him his marching orders.

And Felix never truly improved from there. He scored four goals, and turned in a series of promising performances — but never enough to rescue a languid Chelsea side. There was, for a few weeks, something of a vision that he might be able to fit into the Blues' messy attack, as he certainly had something of an understanding with Enzo Fernandez. And if nothing else, his silkiness in possession also made for a good watch, especially for a fanbase who needed something to get excited about.

But the Blues didn't have the funds, or, more importantly, desire to bring him in on a permanent deal — not for the €100m (£87m/$110m) fee Atletico demanded. It was assumed, at that point, that Felix would return to Atleti and begin another cycle of discontent in the Spanish capital.

What happened next, changed things. Felix gave an exclusive interview to journalist Fabrizio Romano, covering a range of topics. But the quote that stuck regarded his desire to join Barcelona: "Barcelona has always been my first choice and I’d love to join Barca as my next club."

Of course, it worked. Simeone, outraged, slammed Felix in an interview, while the player remained on the fringes of the Atleti squad throughout pre-season, and was stripped of his squad number. It quickly became clear that Barca were simply getting their finances in order to sign him on loan. The Blaugrana had to wait until the last hours of the window — such are their budget constraints — but they eventually got the deal over the line.

  • Getty Images

    An interesting tactical fit

His arrival in Catalunya seemed an interesting — if imperfect — tactical fit. Xavi has assembled a strange Barca squad, unlike most successful Spanish sides of recent years. Last season, they were a tight, disciplined unit. They scored fewer goals than second-placed Real Madrid, and found the back of the net at the same rate as Atleti. Instead, they were immense at the other end, buoyed by Europe's most effective backline.

It made some sense to bring in a fluttering creative presence to counter that, but Felix's lack of bite seemed to be outside Barca's tactical fit. The logic was that he would fit into Barca's box midfield, fighting with Gavi, Pedri and Ilkay Gundogan for minutes — none of whom are easy to leave on the bench. Besides, all of them seemed better tactical fits.

Gavi is a buzzing midfielder, a pest who flies into tackles, nibbles at ankles, and is arguably at his best when he doesn't have the ball. Ilkay Gundogan is equal parts No.10 and No.8, a talented passer with a penchant for finding the killer ball and operating in tight spaces. Pedri, shoulder drops, croquetas and all, is the closest thing to Andres Iniesta that Barcelona have had in years.

Still, Felix can add a spark in the final third. It's something that Lewandowski was adamant that Barca have missed, as he criticised his team's system after their draw with Getafe on the opening weekend of the campaign, claiming that "sometimes we don't play with enough attacking players, I don't have support."

And he had a point. Lewandowski was caught on an island, with no real options. For all of their talents, the rest of Barcelona's midfielders aren't used to playing off a striker. And that's where Felix comes in. The Portuguese is at his best operating as a second striker, doing the creative stuff around a bigger, more direct forward. His problem, for some time now, has been that those systems don't really exist anymore. Europe's best increasingly play with two wide players and perhaps a No.10. Felix can certainly occupy those spaces, but doesn't thrive there.

It is to Xavi's credit, then, that Felix has found a role. On Sunday, he was rarely more than 15 yards away from Lewandowki, staying high up the pitch and linking up with him constantly. Their combination play was vital in the build-up to Barca's second goal, as Felix's delightful dummy will go down as a pseudo-assist for Lewandowski's fine finish.

It was much the same in the Champions League a few days later, Felix again assisting Lewndowski, and also ghosting into the left channel to link-up with the striker for a goal of his own. These, Xavi will hope, are merely glimpses of what could be an ideal partnership.

    How long can this last?

And perhaps this is where Felix's career, at 23, finally takes off. Maybe this reinvented role in a unique system will allow the once-world-beater to realise his potential. A brief glimpse at Felix, in any fixture, for any side, makes his quality undeniable. There are very few players who are technically better than him. This might be the place where that skill, the stuff that looks good on highlight reels, translates into something beyond the realm of YouTube compilations.

There are complications, though. Felix looks like a perfect situational player, ideally used for La Liga contests against dogged defences. Betis was a perfect trial run. Granada, Las Palmas, even Atletico, will offer similar opportunities. But how he fares in Champions League football, and in bigger La Liga games, remains to be seen. These are the kind of fixtures that demand teams defend with 11, or risk getting exposed. Barca will have to be better defensively in those situations, and will perhaps be better suited turning to Gundogan or Pedri to round out their preferred system. Felix will have to live with that.

There also remains the looming financial issues in Catalunya. Barcelona have made some shrewd moves to slash their budget, and spent very little in the transfer market this summer. The usual slew of renegotiated contracts have also freed up some space. Still, they will not be able to meet Atletico's expected asking price for Felix. They weren't willing to put a buy option in his contract, and there have been no reports of an amicable transfer fee reportedly on the table for next summer. This is no longer a player whose value reaches €100m, but he is still an expensive commodity that Barcelona cannot afford.

And that, more broadly, is Xavi's real problem. Felix could be an impact player for the Blaugrana, the kind of option that will be useful to beat the bad teams, and provide a moment of inspiration against the good ones. For a side that has ambitions to defend its La Liga crown from last year, and push deep into the Champions League, he could be crucial.

But for all of that, there is an overwhelming feeling that he could only be a temporary fix. Barca's best bet is to enjoy him while they can.

Pundit urges Leeds to sign Andrew Ayew from Swansea - Exclusive

Carlton Palmer believes that it could be worth Leeds exploring the possibility of signing free agent Andre Ayew this summer.

Ayew has been one of the standout strikers in the Championship in recent years, scoring 33 league goals across the last two seasons to help Swansea qualify for the play-offs on both occasions.

However, following their recent play-off final defeat to Brentford, the Ghanaian’s departure was confirmed, meaning he’s available to sign for nothing having run his contract down in South Wales.

Celtic are reportedly keening a close eye on the 31-year-old, but Leeds could hold an advantage due to the fact Ayew has previously played under and scored goals under Marcelo Bielsa during their one season together at Marseille in 2014-15.

Leeds already have two strikers in their ranks in Patrick Bamford and Rodrigo, but Palmer thinks that signing a proven goalscorer like Ayew on a free would be impressive business.

He told The Transfer Tavern:

“Swansea have only let him go because they didn’t get promoted and he’s their highest-paid player.

“17 goals in the Championship, 16 goals the season before stands to reason that he will go up and score goals in the Premier League. If he weighs in with 10 or 12 goals for you, and you take him on a free, that could be some good business.”
