Newcastle loanee Freddie Woodman stuns fans in Swansea win

[ad_pod ]

Swansea moved up to second in the Championship with their win over QPR on Wednesday evening, and fans were blown away by the performance of Newcastle loanee Freddie Woodman.

The Swans came away from Loftus Road with all three points, as goals from Bersant Celina, Borja and Sam Surridge gave the visitors a 3-1 victory.

It’s not the goalscorers who are getting all the attention however, as Woodman dropped a goalkeeping master-class on the night.

He did concede just after the hour mark to a Jordan Hugill header, but the hosts produced a whopping 22 shots and seven corners, barraging the youngster’s goal all night.

The 22 year-old produced a brilliant save early on to deny Eberechi Eze and added a couple more stops after the break, but it was his command of his box that was really impressive.

Magpies goalkeeper Martin Dubravka attracted a shock link to Juvenus this summer, so could Woodman be the man in line to replace the Slovakian if he does eventually leave Tyneside?

Judging from the Twitter reactions down below, he’s certainly capable…

Faf du Plessis appointed Axar Patel's deputy at Delhi Capitals

Part of the IPL since 2012, du Plessis was RCB’s captain for the past three seasons

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Mar-2025Faf du Plessis is going to be Axar Patel’s deputy at Delhi Capitals (DC) for IPL 2025.Du Plessis, who was the captain at Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) till the end of IPL 2024, was released by the franchise ahead of the mega auction last year, and was subsequently acquired by DC for his base price of INR 2 crore (US$0.24 million). He was chosen ahead of KL Rahul, another former IPL captain who moved to DC this year.

Du Plessis, a former South Africa captain in all formats, became a part of the IPL in 2012 after Chennai Super Kings (CSK) brought him on board. He remained a part of the team till the end of the 2015 season, moved to Rising Pune Supergiant/s for two seasons when CSK were banned from the IPL, and went back to CSK, staying there till 2021. RCB bought him at the auction in 2022 and, with Virat Kohli stepping down as the team’s captain ahead of that season, was given charge of the team. He led them for three seasons, and while RCB reached the playoffs in both 2022 and 2024, they are yet to win the trophy they have chased for 17 seasons now.Related

  • 'Funny off the field, focused on it' – DC players on Axar Patel

Overall in the IPL, the 40-year-old du Plessis has 4571 runs from 145 matches at an average of 35.99 and a strike rate of 136.37. He remains active in the franchise cricket circuit, and last turned out in the SA20 for Joburg Super Kings earlier this year. He could also be in demand when the teams start building their squads for the upcoming season of the Hundred, with Southern Brave, now owned by the GMR Group that also owns DC, working on a deal to bring him on board.DC have never won the IPL, and in an effort to change that statistic, have overhauled their team, removing Ricky Ponting, among others, from their coaching staff and putting Hemang Badani in charge as head coach, Matthew Mott as assistant coach, Kevin Pietersen as team mentor, and Munaf Patel, Venugopal Rao and Vijay Bharadwaj in positions of authority. Axar’s elevation to the leadership position was also a part of the rejig, with Rishabh Pant, their captain till the previous season, going back into the auction and subsequently being picked up by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), where he was named captain. Rahul led LSG till last season.

Flexible thinking keeps Bangladesh afloat but they remain behind the curve in T20

Dropping Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur down the order was a sensible call, even if it didn’t pay off against Oman

Mohammad Isam19-Oct-20216:54

Nafees: Whenever Bangladesh have needed Shakib, he has done it

Only one of Bangladesh’s changes was successful in their 26-run win over Oman. Mohammad Naim made 64 after being brought back to the side replacing Soumya Sarkar. But Mahedi Hasan, Nurul Hasan and Afif Hossain couldn’t do justice to their batting promotions at the expense of the experienced Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim. It looked like a reactionary decision from the team management, particularly after BCB president Nazmul Hassan criticized the senior batters after the Scotland defeat. But going by Bangladesh’s usual decision-making this was close to actually being a brave move. It was the correct call to bring back their regular opener, try to fire up the Powerplay with someone who has the ability to clear the infield and then give two of their known big-hitters some space to do their job.Related

  • Naim, Shakib, Mustafizur help Bangladesh stay alive with first points

It was perhaps disappointing that Bangladesh had to take these brave calls in a do-or-die match rather than when there was less pressure on them. But at least they have chosen the right path.Mahedi was sent up to No. 3 to get Bangladesh more runs in the Powerplay. They sent Afif and Nurul at Nos. 5 and 6 to take advantage of the 80-run partnership between Naim and Shakib Al Hasan. These two are being groomed as finishers, so they were given at least six overs to try to launch. It looked odd to see Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur languishing at Nos. 7 and 8, but it is also known that both are good in the last five overs.”We want to have different types of batters batting at the same time, not similar types of players,” head coach Russell Domingo said on Monday. “We have discussed it more in depth. There might not be major changes, but there might be one or two tweaks in the line-up.”None of these batting order alterations worked in the end. Mahedi, Afif and Sohan didn’t get runs while Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur couldn’t fire in the last three overs. But it was good of them to try. They also made a course-correction by bringing back Naim, their regular T20 opener. Domingo said that he missed the last game as Soumya Sarkar was considered as a sixth bowling option. But it was also true that Naim’s form wasn’t at its best, and Soumya did score couple of 30s in the warm-up games.Bangladesh’s team management probably also considered this difference in recent scores, but it wasn’t a great look for them. They had to bring back Naim, who helped take Bangladesh past the 150-mark.Decisions like these are judged quite simply. If Bangladesh had lost against Oman, they would have been out of the T20 World Cup. These changes would then come under fire. Now that they have won, it probably won’t get as much attention, but it should mean the management remains flexible in their decision-making.That being said, Bangladesh don’t yet have a good T20I team. They don’t have the firepower. They will get you the fours but not the big sixes regularly. As former batting coach Neil McKenzie said a number of times, Bangladesh can’t be expected to play like West Indies. There hasn’t also been any effort made at either a micro or macro level. Players haven’t developed or transformed themselves into big-hitters, while the pitches, make-up and focus of domestic T20 tournaments haven’t really contributed to any eye-catching improvement.Shakib Al Hasan and Mohammad Naim put on a vital partnership•ICC via Getty

What Bangladesh have done is rely heavily in an old T20 mindset. It is almost similar to how they play in the ODIs. Keep wickets in the first few overs, bat solidly in the middle overs and then launch in the last five overs. In recent months, Bangladesh employed their Test strategy of producing tailor-made pitches at home, specifically suited to spinners who can run through batting line-ups. As much as they enjoyed beating Australia 4-1 and New Zealand 3-2, it felt hollow because their batters, already not in tune with T20’s evolving styles, never got going. The overall lack of T20 skills also means that Bangladesh, despite having a very experienced T20 side, don’t have those X-factor players. A big-hitter whose walk to the middle arouses fear in the opposition. An out-and-out fast bowler who can close out the game. Or even a regular legspinner. But where they lack in skills, they can always make up in taking smart decisions on and off the field. Teams who aren’t too experienced or skilled, often get by with great fielding and thinking on their feet. Even when they are being flexible, Bangladesh also can’t forget what works for them. They have to make room for Shakib, Mushfiqur and Mahmudullah in the batting order so that the team’s most-skilled batters have enough space to do their jobs. The bowlers too must also remain a consistent unit, because it is a well-organised attack. They know their specific roles, but often come up short in crucial moments.Bangladesh must also take the hard decisions, particularly with Soumya and Liton Das, who haven’t really done justice to their talent in six years. A T20 World Cup is perhaps not the place to deeply think about their roles in the team, but if what they are doing isn’t working, why not be a little more bold and give their batting spots to someone else for a change? If almost everyone has the same type of skills, then greater flexibility needs to be in order.

Unfettered Shahzad leads Afghanistan's compelling charge

Belief and audacity in the face of daunting challenges define Afghanistan’s players – especially a particular opening batsman – and their fans, and it is a stirring sight

Andrew Miller at the Wankhede21-Mar-20161:26

Jayawardene: Tough for bowlers to curtail Shahzad

March 19, England team hotel, Mumbai: “We’ve watched him for a while now, but last night was about as in control as he has ever looked. He didn’t look to over-hit the ball, he didn’t look out of stride and the ball still travelled a long way.”March 20, Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai: “I play my own game because I am waiting for the loose delivery. When I find a loose delivery, whether it is the first ball or last ball of the match, a four-day game, Test match, I don’t care. I just play my own game, like MS Dhoni, you know.”Two chases against South Africa, a mere 48 hours apart. Two opening batsmen in chases against South Africa, separated by time and space, chalk and cheese, war and peace, aesthetics and athletics, economics and politics, and even victory and defeat. But England’s Jason Roy and Afghanistan’s Mohammad Shahzad, two contrasting cricketers who are destined to face off against one another in Delhi on Wednesday, now have one indelible trait in common. It was Eoin Morgan, England’s captain, who offered the above appraisal of Roy’s performance in their sensational tournament-reviving chase – all 43 runs and 16 balls of it. It was as textbook a demolition as you could ever hope to witness: full face, flowing blade, measured timing. Test match intent allied to T20’s power.Three of Roy’s eight boundaries cleared the rope, but one shot in particular, an on-driven four in Kagiso Rabada’s first over, simply drooled with technique. “I’m calling that as shot of the day,” tweeted one English journalist, inadvertently channelling the existential prejudice that holds one-day cricket back in his country. “Just warms my heart.”But then, 48 hours later in the very same stadium, there was Shahzad, warming hearts with such ferocity that he damn near burnt the Wankhede to the ground.”It was like an earthquake!” said Noor Ahmad Faiz, a 22-year-old student from Kandahar, who had travelled up from Pune University to watch his very first game. Perched up in the top tier of the Sunil Gavaskar Stand at midwicket, baking in the afternoon sun but cavorting with his countrymen at the preposterous barrage down below him, Noor was living a dream that Roy, only two days earlier, had demonstrated could yet be a reality. There was belief in those bleachers – face-painted, lungi-ed, flag-hoisting belief. “Where are you from?” I asked one cabal of pale-eyed, pale-skinned supporters – with green, red and black stripes down their cheeks and grins as wide as the Hindu Kush. “Afghanistan!” came the answer, their ignorance of nuance every bit as appealing as a Shahzad smear for six.”No, I mean, which city… or village…” [blank] “Afghanistan!””Are you a length-ball, or a half volley or…” [smack] “Afghanistan!”Colour, vigour and belief: Afghanistan fans at the Wankhede•Getty ImagesBefore any further questions could be asked, of fan or ball, a ear-splitting rendition of Afghan Jalabi would burst through the PA system, and render anything but dance moves irrelevant until the stands had stopped throbbing and the bowler was back at the top of his mark. The legend of Shahzad has been gathering momentum all tournament long but this was his crowning insanity. Far from accepting – as lesser talents might have done – that AB de Villiers’ mini-classic 64 from 29 balls had put South Africa’s stamp of authority on the contest, Shahzad instead accepted the challenge as if it was a Facebook friend request, and set about sending those runs straight back where they came from.Kyle Abbott bore the brunt of Shahzad’s exquisite retribution. Three sixes and a four spilled out from his opening over, the second of which – a full-frontal nude of an on-drive – featured a follow-through so uplifting it might as well have had a canister of helium attached to it.His innings was nonsensical tomfoolery (the Wankhede scoreboard settled for the word “marvellous”) and though it wasn’t built to last, it instilled pride throughout Afghanistan’s order – from the established campaigners, Gulbadin Naib and Samiullah Shenwari, right through to the 17-year-old Rashid Khan, who slogged South Africa’s Mr Angry, Chris Morris, for consecutive fours before taking one liberty too many and being bowled for 11.If Afghanistan’s defeat was inevitable, then it was also incremental. Hope drained slowly from the match situation as South Africa brought their greater nous to bear. Afghanistan had been well ahead of the requirement at the halfway mark of their chase, but that critical 10-run-an-over rate of which Morgan had spoken in the wake of England’s victory was allowed, through inexperience and over-ambition, to drift out to the realms of the unfeasible. On the stroke of the 19th over, as Dawlat Zadran was bowled by Morris to complete a match haul of 4 for 27, Noor and his fellow Pune students left their seats as if they were accepting the inevitable and seeking to beat the rush home. Instead, they were merely decamping to the top of the stairwell, from where they unfurled a massive Afghanistan flag that kept the defiance going right up to the final ball of the match.”We are new in this cricket world, it is all too much for us,” Noor said. “But trust is the most important thing in life, and we trust in the Blue Tigers. One day, inshallah, we will win the World Cup.”While he waits for that day to come, Noor’s duty is to return to his studies in Pune, where he is three years into a civil-engineering degree, paid for by a government scholarship, and one that he hopes will eventually assist in rebuilding his war-torn nation.”I really love my country and I want to help make it, whatever the conditions,” he said. His particular ambition is to build hospitals, as a tribute to his father, a doctor in Kandahar, who gave him his grounding in life. English, Noor added, is one of five languages that he speaks fluently – he is busy adding Hindi to his repertoire by spending his free time in the cinema.Others had travelled even further to witness Afghanistan carry the fight. Amir Khan and his son Walid were among a group of seven men from the same village outside Kabul who spent several overs arguing in animated terms with a security guard who objected to their flag blotting out the ICC branding on the front of their stand.Nothing could detract from their pride at their team’s performance, however, not even the steady loss of wickets. It was as their captain, Asghar Stanikzai, had said on the eve of the match – in victory or defeat, the whole country remains united behind the feats of their cricketers, and that, in the fast-setting sun at the Wankhede on Sunday evening, was a beautiful sight indeed.”We are very young in this format, but in T20 if the batting side is good and the bowling side is good, we will win,” Shahzad said at the close. “If we improve our fielding, and get a partnership to stay at the wicket, we will stay in the World Cup.” England have been warned. In Delhi on Wednesday, Afghanistan will dance to their own tune, come what may.

Spurs eyeing "wonderful" £15m Kulusevski upgrade after Alasdair Gold reveal

While Tottenham Hotspur ultimately failed to qualify for the Champions League this season, Ange Postecoglou's ability to secure Europa League football without Harry Kane at the club means that, on balance, the campaign has to be viewed as a success.

However, the footballing world moves quickly, so the North Londoners will already be hard at work planning their summer transfer window, with the ambition of clawing back a top-four place next season.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou

In fact, one of the latest players touted for a move to N17 could be the perfect first signing of the summer, even if their arrival could threaten Dejan Kulusevksi's place in the side.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from renowned journalist Alasdair Gold, Tottenham Hotspur are "keeping an eye" on Sporting CP's star winger Marcus Edwards ahead of the summer window.

Sporting winger Marcus Edwards.

One of the reasons the club are interested in the Englishman, beyond his ability, is that he's a homegrown talent who came up through the Lilywhites' academy system before moving to Portugal in September 2019.

It was reported in September 2022 that the winger had a £52m release clause inserted in his contract with Sporting, but Gold has claimed the Lisbon-based club value the 25-year-old at around £15m plus add-ons.

Former Vitoria star Marcus Edwards.

In all, it looks like it could be a relatively straightforward deal for Daniel Levy and Co to pull off, and if they can get him for that price, one they can't afford to miss, even if it impacts Kulusevski.

How Edwards compares to Kulusevski

Now, suggesting that Edwards could come in to challenge Kulusevski for a starting spot on the right may sound egregious to some, but the Englishman has been putting in impressive performances in Portugal for several seasons now and has the stats to show it.

For example, last season, he racked up 12 goals and 14 assists in just 51 games before scoring six and providing nine in 44 games this year, meaning that he has averaged a goal involvement every 2.31 games since the start of the 2022/23 campaign.

In comparison, Spurs' Swedish international managed just two goals and eight assists in 37 games last season while doing slightly better this year, managing a haul of eight goals and three assists in 39 games, giving him an average of a goal involvement every 3.61 games.

It's not just in their raw output that the "wonderful" Englishman, as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, comes out ahead, though, as his underlying numbers are also superior.

For example, while the former Juventus man maintains a better-passing accuracy and wins more aerial duels per 90, the Sporting star produces a higher non-penalty expected goal and assists figure, produces more progressive passes and carries, takes more shots and shots on target and produces more shot and goal-creating actions, also all per 90.

The London-born star is also a more accomplished dribbler than his potential competition, lending credence to Owen Hargreaves' claim that he often "leaves people for dead" when going forward.

Ultimately, we can't know for sure whether Edwards' impressive form will transfer to the Premier League, but if it does, he would be a serious threat to Kulusevski and, for the price being reported, an absolute bargain.

Man Utd in talks to sign "magic" star who could be their answer to Foden

After a long campaign filled with disappointment and frustration, Manchester United ended the 2023/24 season in triumph.

Erik ten Hag’s side played with belief and togetherness, which helped them lift the FA Cup over Manchester City while also securing them a spot in the Europa League for next season.

This wasn’t only a massive boost for the squad, but it also gave Sir Jim Ratcliffe a better chance at acquiring his targets, with the benefit of playing in Europe now also a selling point.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at a long-term Man United target who could just become their own version of Phil Foden.

Man Utd’s search for a new attacker

As per a report from TEAMtalk, Man Utd will look to make Michael Olise one of their first signings under the reign of Ratcliffe.

At this moment in time, the Red Devils are “leading the race for him,” having already made numerous contacts with the French forward’s representatives. It’s stated talks will continue to take place over the coming weeks.

Crystal Palace's Michael Olise

However, Chelsea are also desperate to make Olise one of the key players in their rebuild, which could become an issue for United.

Nonetheless, in order to drag the star away from Crystal Palace, teams must pay his £60m release clause, which may give United an advantage as the Blues could turn to alternatives.

How Olise compares to Foden

Man City’s Foden has truly developed into a world-class star over the last few seasons in particular, becoming a true winner who has led his club to continuous success.

The number 47 has been instrumental this season, especially in the top flight, helping City to their fourth consecutive title and claiming the Premier League Player of the Season award.

His contribution was certainly worthy of the honour, as the England international scored 19 goals and provided eight assists in 35 appearances.

This is the exact type of player that Ratcliffe desperately wants to sign for the Red Devils, one that can help transform the club, and Olise could just be that exact individual.

Olise and Foden boasted very similar numbers in the league this season, with the Eagle even registering better statistics in a host of important areas. That’s rather remarkable considering the former doesn’t play for the best team in the world.

FBref classify the duo as similar players, which is mainly due to their ability to score and create, which makes them both elite talents, and of course, they have technical class in abundance.

There’s also the similarity that they both possess magical left feet, yet also boast the ability to use their weaker side to great effect, making them far more unpredictable to defend against.

However, what the previous statistics don’t display is that the “magic” Olise, as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, has scored ten goals and assisted six in just 14 starts, which is just two contributions behind Bruno Fernandes and four more than second-place Rasmus Hojlund.

Crystal Palace player Michael Olise

Therefore, it’s clear that if the 22-year-old were to join, he’d have an enormous impact on the squad, in a similar manner to United’s noisy neighbours’ ace Foden.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Christian Pulisic played a pivotal role in AC Milan’s first win of the season, assisting and scoring a penalty in their 4-0 triumph over Venezia.

Milan, who had struggled to score early in the season, came out aggressively. Left back Theo Hernandez scored within the first two minutes, setting the tone for the match. Pulisic then made his impact felt, assisting Youssouf Fofana on a corner kick. Fofana headed the ball into the net to double Milan’s lead.

Perhaps as a reward for his season so far, Pulisic was called upon to take a penalty in the 25th minute, which he converted to score his second goal of the season. Tammy Abraham, who previously played alongside Pulisic at Chelsea, added a second penalty to complete Milan’s scoring. USMNT star Yunus Musah joined in late, at the 74th minute, to help close out the game.

For Venezia, while the match result was disappointing, there was a silver lining as American midfielder Gianluca Busio made his season debut.
