Southampton In Pole Position To Sign "Incredible" Forward

Southampton are thought to be in pole position to sign Sunderland forward Ross Stewart this summer, according to reliable reporter Alan Nixon.

What’s the latest Southampton transfer news?

The Saints and new manager Russell Martin have made a start in the transfer market ahead of the 2023/24 Championship campaign, with two new faces already brought in.

Former Swansea left-back Ryan Manning has made the move to St Mary’s on a free transfer to reunite with Martin, whereas young midfielder Shea Charles has arrived from Manchester City. Further new arrivals look to be of interest to the Saints and Martin, though, and a new attacker is seemingly on the cards.

Martin currently has four centre-forward options on the books in Che Adams, Paul Onuachu, Adam Armstrong and Sekou Mara. However, Adams is into the final 12 months of his contract and is attracting interest from a number of Premier League clubs, so the Scotland international could be on the way out before the September 1 deadline.

Should he depart, it appears as if another Scot in Stewart could come in and fill the void left by Adams, with rumours claiming the Sunderland man wants to join the Saints.

The 72 relayed a new update from Nixon’s Patreon page on Sunday regarding Southampton and a move for Stewart.

It is believed that the Saints are in pole position and therefore the front runners to secure the forward’s services this summer, despite his recent injury issues.

Who is Ross Stewart?

Stewart, hailed as "incredible" by Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman, began his career in Scotland, representing the likes of St Mirren and Ross County.

He made the move to Sunderland in 2021, though, and has impressed when fit for the Black Cates, helping them win promotion to the Championship during the 2021/22 campaign.

Primarily a centre-forward, Stewart can also play on the wing if required and has scored 40 goals in 80 appearances for his current employers. However, as mentioned, the forward has struggled with injury recently, missing large parts of the previous season with an Achilles issue that required surgery.

Stewart is into the final 12 months of his deal, though, with Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray recently admitting he is unaware if the forward will sign a new deal.

“I don't sit across the table with Ross or his agent and discuss that sort of thing. All I know is we could do with him.

“He's an exceptionally good player in this league and he's shown that. Even though he hasn't played many games in this league, his goals per game is quite incredible and I know how influential he is in our dressing room even though he's not fit and available.

"In an ideal world Ross signs a new contract and the team looks so much stronger."

It looks as if the player is keen on swapping Sunderland for Southampton over the coming weeks, and following Nixon’s update, a move could well be one to keep an eye on heading into the new season.

Liverpool: Klopp Can Sign Henderson Upgrade In £323k-p/w Machine

An update has emerged on the potential availability of one of Liverpool's transfer targets ahead of the 2023/24 Premier League campaign…

What's the latest Liverpool transfer news?

According to German outlet Kicker, Bayern Munich could be open to offers for central midfielder Joshua Kimmich as they attempt to build up enough funds to push for Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane.

They claim that the Bundesliga giants may be willing to listen to proposals for the 28-year-old star, who has two years left to run on his deal in Bavaria.

This comes amid speculation over captain Jordan Henderson's future. The England international is reportedly closing in on a £10m move to Saudi Arabian side Al Ettifaq, who are managed by Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard.

How good is Joshua Kimmich?

Jurgen Klopp could now land a massive upgrade on the English veteran by signing Kimmich as the German international has proven himself at the top level over the course of a number of seasons.

The 79-cap star has played 347 competitive matches for Bayern Munich and accumulated an impressive 20 trophies to date, including one Champions League, which is 12 more than Henderson has managed in 492 games for the Reds.

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson.

This shows that the Bavarian-based machine is a proven winner who could drive Liverpool forward to win more major silverware over the coming years, as he knows what it takes to consistently lift trophies.

His form for Bayern over the last 12 months also suggests that the quality is there for him to improve Klopp's midfield as a replacement for Henderson.

Kimmich averaged a phenomenal Sofascore rating of 7.73 across 33 Bundesliga matches, which would have played him top of the Reds squad as Trent Alexander-Arnold led the way with a score of 7.32.

The German all-rounder showcased his creativity with an outstanding 2.7 key passes per game – 0.8 more than any of Liverpool's players – and a total of 11 'big chances' created for his teammates.

This did not result in him shying away from his defensive responsibilities, though, as the £323k-per-week sensation made 3.6 tackles and interceptions combined per outing, which would have placed him joint-top for the Reds with Thiago Alcantara and shows that he is able to cut out opposition attacks on a regular basis to protect his goal.

Henderson, meanwhile, averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.88 – the 12th-highest in the team – across 35 Premier League games last season.

The 33-year-old leader did not offer as much as Kimmich in or out of possession as he managed 0.9 key passes to go along with 1.5 tackles and interceptions combined per clash.

Therefore, the Bayern powerhouse, who was once described as a "phenomenal" player by legendary manager Jose Mourinho, would be a massive upgrade on Henderson in midfield.

Their respective statistics last season indicate that the 28-year-old dynamo would provide Klopp with more quality as a defensive anchor in front of the defence whilst also being able to open up the opposition with his impressive passing to create chances for his teammate with greater regularity.

If the German giants are open to offers for their midfield machine, Liverpool must test the waters to see if they can be at the front of the queue.

Southampton Make Contact Over Deal For £72k-p/w Titan

An update has emerged on Southampton and their plans to bolster their set of defensive options ahead of the start of the 2023/24 season…

What's the latest Southampton transfer news?

According to Football Insider, the Saints have made contact with Everton to enquire about a possible swoop for central defender Mason Holgate this summer.

The report claims that the Championship side are eyeing up a deal to sign the £72k-per-week enforcer on loan and that Sean Dyche has agreed to allow him to move on.

It states that Premier League side Sheffield United and fellow second tier outfit Leeds United have also contacted the Toffees to explore a move for the 26-year-old ace.

How good is Mason Holgate?

The Everton enforcer is a player with the potential to be an excellent performer for the Saints if Russell Martin can help him to rediscover his best form.

It has been reported by the Daily Mail that Holgate is being targeted by Southampton as a possible replacement for Duje Caleta-Car, who is attracting interest from Ligue 1 side Lyon, and his displays at Goodison Park in the past suggest that he has the scope to become a dream heir to the Croatian titan.

Southampton centre-back Duje Caleta-Car.

The English gem has averaged a dismal Sofascore rating of 6.65 or lower over the last two Premier League seasons but his form throughout the 2019/20 campaign suggests that the quality is there for him to be a superb player.

Holgate averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.01 that year, which would have placed him third in the Saints team last term, as he made 2.9 tackles and interceptions per game and won 63% of his individual duels at the back, whilst the talented battler did not make a single error leading to a shot or goal for the opposition.

This shows that the ex-West Bromwich Albion loanee does have the ability to deliver consistently brilliant performances at Premier League level, which suggests that the potential is there for him to be an outstanding performer in the Championship.

A drop down to the second tier could help the defender to get back to his best and a loan would mean that Southampton are not burdened with him in the long-term if he fails to recapture his previous form.

Holgate could, therefore, be a dream replacement for Caleta-Car if the former Marseille colossus joins Lyon as his statistics during the 2019/20 season are more impressive than the current St. Mary's defender's from last term.

The 26-year-old warrior averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.90 across 13 league matches for the club and won 57% of his duels, although he did make one mistake that led to a shot for the other team.

Only four Saints players averaged a higher Sofascore rating and this suggests that the £52k-per-week "leader" – as once hailed by the Liverpool ECHO journalist Sam Carroll – was one of the team's top performers, which is why it is crucial for Martin to bring in a quality replacement for him before the deadline.

Holgate's form for Everton in the past shows that the potential is there for him to be that player, which is why the Southampton head coach could land a dream heir to Caleta-Car at centre-back with this possible swoop for the English talent.

Leeds Still Keen On Move For 26-Year-Old Centre-Back

Leeds United transfer chiefs Nick Hammond and Gretar Steinsson are targeting Liverpool centre-back Nat Phillips this summer, according to journalist Beren Cross.

How old is Nat Phillips?

The 26-year-old has almost become something of a cult hero at Anfield, following an impressive spell during the back-end of the 2020/21 season, when he filled in after a host of injuries to key men and helped the Reds finish third in the Premier League. It led to him being known as the 'Bolton Baresi', in relation to AC Milan's legendary hero Franco Baresi.

On the whole, though, Phillips has had to settle for being nothing more than a fringe player, with Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez all ahead of him in the centre-back pecking order. Last season, for example, he only played 66 minutes of action, starting once and coming on as a substitute on another occasion.

The Englishman is out of contract at Liverpool in the summer of 2025, but given his lack of playing time, it would be a surprise if he was still at the club beyond the end of the current transfer window.

nat-phillips-liverpool-leeds-united-transfer-gossip-farke-promotion

Could Leeds sign Nat Phillips?

According to Leeds Live's Cross, Phillips is still on Leeds radar ahead of a summer move for the Liverpool man, although he isn't the only target:

"Centre-backs, left-backs, central midfielders, advanced playmakers and centre forwards would be wise bases to target between now and September 1.

"The former are, LeedsLive understands, currently being targeted with the most vigour by Gretar Steinsson and Nick Hammond. Liverpool’s Nat Phillips and Manchester City’s Taylor Harwood-Bellis remain under consideration as two of the options in central defence they like."

Phillips may have ultimately struggled to make the grade at Liverpool, in terms of becoming a genuine key man for an extended period of time, but he could be an excellent signing by Leeds, as they look to return to the Premier League from the Championship as quickly as possible.

Jurgen Klopp once lauded the defender as "absolutely insane" when hailing his performances, which says a lot about the quality he possesses, and he could be a dominant force for the Whites, at a time when they could really do with a leader at the heart of their defence.

Phillips averaged 4.5 aerial duel wins per game across two EFL Cup appearances last season, showing what a monster he is in the air, but he is also arguably underrated on the ball because of his physical stature, having enjoyed an 86.6% pass completion in the Premier League in 2022/23.

At 26, the Liverpool centre-back is at a good age, with his peak years potentially still to come, so he could be a key figure at the back for Leeds for the next four or five years, coming straight in as one of the first name on the team sheet and immediately making the Whites more resolute at the back.

Phillips aforementioned cult status means he could also be a popular player with the supporter, always giving his all and proving to be an excellent team player.

Man Utd Eyeing Scholes 2.0 In "Phenomenal" £30m Titan

There has been an update regarding Manchester United's pursuit of Fiorentina midfielder, Sofyan Amrabat…

What's the latest on Amrabat to Man United?

As respected journalist Laurie Whitwell revealed on Twitter, should the Red Devils manage to move on both Fred and Donny van de Beek over the coming weeks, there is a possibility that Erik ten Hag and co could firm up their interest in the Moroccan international.

The transfer insider stated: "Real Sociedad continuing talks with #MUFC over Donny van de Beek. Turkish offers for Fred not at level hoped, though. Two midfield sales would mean a formal approach for Sofyan Amrabat is expected."

Read the latest Manchester United transfer news HERE…

In his attached piece for The Athletic, Whitwell revealed that United have already held talks with the Serie A side regarding a potential move and personal terms are not likely to prove a problem, with the 26-year-old having previously worked under Ten Hag at FC Utrecht.

Should Man United sign Amrabat?

The 6 foot 1 titan – who has been valued at around £30m – put himself firmly on the map of clubs across Europe as a result of his standout displays at the World Cup in Qatar, having undoubtedly been "phenomenal" in the tournament as Morocco reached the last four, in the words of The Star's Joe Crann.

Hailed as a "raging bull" by journalist, Amine El Amri, the Netherlands-born sensation proved he can offer a stern defensive presence in the centre of the park after notably providing a stunning, recovery challenge on France's Kylian Mbappe, while averaging an impressive 3.2 tackles and interceptions per game in the competition as a whole.

A player with an edge to his game, the former Club Brugge ace is also something of a pass master in the centre of the park and is a figure who can seemingly dictate the tempo of the game, as he ranks in the top 5% among his European peers for pass completion, as well as in the top 8% for progressive passes.

Paul Scholes for Man United

That combination of an aggressive streak with the ability to run the show on the ball from his deep-lying berth perhaps evokes memories of a certain Paul Scholes, with the tough-tackling United legend having been a true genius when in possession during his lengthy stint at Old Trafford.

Like Amrabat in some ways, the one-club legend was also arguably a "complete" asset in the centre of the park due to his quality on and off the ball, with Barcelona counterpart Xavi Hernandez having previously said of his talents:

"Scholes is a spectacular player who has everything. He can play the final pass, he can score, he is strong, he never gets knocked off the ball and he doesn’t give possession away."

As club icon Sir Bobby Charlton also stated in the past, Scholes had the ability to "find a way to win, to make the killer pass or produce the decisive volley", having been a true difference maker in a glittering period for United under Sir Alex Ferguson's watch.

While hardly a threat in attack in the same way as the Englishman – having scored just 11 career goals to date – Amrabat proved under Ten Hag at Utrecht that he can also 'make the killer pass' if needed, having registered ten assists in just 50 games while working with the Dutchman.

Although it is yet to be seen if the Fiorentina man can replicate such form in the Premier League, it is clear to see why Ten Hag is keen on a reunion with a player who seemingly has shades of Scholes.

Man United: Ten Hag Makes Personal Phone Call To Jean-Clair Todibo

Erik ten Hag has played a deciding role in Jean-Clair Todibo's desire to join Manchester United this summer, according to reports, with the OGC Nice defender strongly linked with a move.

The Red Devils are reportedly looking to sign a central defender, amid the pending exit of Harry Maguire to West Ham United.

What's the latest on Jean-Clair Todibo to Manchester United?

With United in need of another centre-back this summer, it seems it was Ten Hag's phone call which led to Tobido's desire to make the move to Old Trafford, according to Nice-Matin, via Sport Witness.

The report claimed that even though several clubs have been chasing the Frenchman's signature, the phone call from the United manager has taken ahold of his attention.

With that said, the Red Devils must now attempt to reach an agreement with Nice for their defender, who they reportedly want nothing less than €40m (£35m) for before the end of the summer transfer window,

United, of course, have just sanctioned the sale of Maguire to West Ham for a reported £30m fee, as confirmed by Hammers manager David Moyes, who said, via Roshane Thomas: "We've had a bid accepted from Manchester United, but while he's not our player I'm not in a position to discuss him."

Given Todibo's reported price-tag, United may well turn to Nice in pursuit of a defender once Maguire completes his exit.

Should Manchester United sign Jean-Clair Todibo?

Jean-Clair Todibo

Potentially arriving as a Maguire replacement, signing Todibo would represent another piece of solid business from United this summer, who have already welcomed Mason Mount, Andre Onana, and Rasmus Hojlund in the current transfer window.

Todibo would be an instant upgrade on Maguire, who endured a spell to forget at Old Trafford.

Read the latest Man United transfer news HERE…

The statistics only back that up, too. According to FBref, last season, the United target made more progressive passes, won more tackles, and enjoyed a better pass completion rate. Add in the fact that Todibo is still only 22, compared to 29-year-old Maguire, and it looks like a piece of business that United must make sure to complete in the coming weeks.

Nice manager Francesco Farioli recently spoke about Todibo's future, saying, via 90Min: "Of course we would like Todibo to stay, but it can be complicated. We have to wait to see who will want to buy him and if everyone finds an agreement there.

"He is a leader, a very strong player mentally, he has improved a lot and he is ready to reach the very top level."

As United prepare for their opening day clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League, we'll get a first real look at just how much Ten Hag's side has developed over the course of pre-season, and with that, just where Todibo could fit in if he makes the move.

It's certainly going to be a busy end to the transfer window, if the reports are anything to go by. If the Red Devils can seal Maguire's exit, whilst welcoming someone of Todibo's calibre, it would be yet another smart move from those at Old Trafford.

Reporter reveals why Everton didn’t sign Ross Barkley

Everton didn't want to make a move for one specific player this summer because Sean Dyche didn't want him, according to journalist Paul Brown.

Where is Ross Barkley playing now?

Ross Barkley burst onto the scene at Goodison Park as a hugely exciting prospect, with some even tipping him to enjoy a similar career trajectory to Wayne Rooney. He looked like a special young talent as a teenager, already possessing good physical attributes, as well as a fearlessness in possession.

While the 29-year-old enjoyed plenty of good moments in an Everton shirt, registering 55 goal contributions (27 goals and 28 assists) in 179 appearances, he ultimately didn't hit the heights many expected and joined Chelsea in 2018. Since then, his career has nosedived, with his reputation diminishing by the year, following a loan spell at Aston Villa that started well and dropped off, and a season at Nice last term.

Read the latest Everton transfer news HERE…

Now, Barkley has sealed a summer move to Premier League newcomers Luton Town, in a transfer that will hopefully revitalise him, following such a noticeable dropoff since leaving the Blues. A return to Merseyside was mooted, but it never came to fruition.

Why didn't Everton re-sign Ross Barkley?

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Brown claimed that a return to Goodison for Barkley never looked on the cards, with Dyche not seeing him as a good option to bring in:

"If he came back and had a bad game, I think the fans would be right on his back. He would have had a pretty rough ride from them. But the problem was that I just don't think Sean Dyche wanted Ross Barkley. I don't think he's the sort of player that Sean Dyche wants in his team and, for that reason, I never could really see this one happening."

Ultimately, any big decision regarding a new signing should end with the manager, so if Dyche never wanted Barkley, it was a transfer that wasn't even worth persevering with.

As Brown alludes to, it wouldn't have taken much for the Englishman to have started receiving criticism from supporters if he didn't hit the ground running, which could have spread a negative vibe throughout the club.

There is no doubting Barkley's ability as a footballer, with six goals and 33 caps coming his way for England down the years, but there is also no question that he hasn't reached his potential, with injuries not helping and a lack of a killer mindset arguably holding him back compared to others, in terms of professionalism.

It will be interesting to see how he fares in a Luton shirt, in what could ultimately be his last crack at staying put in the Premier League – he does turn 30 later this year, after all – but it would be a surprise if he came close to matching those early Everton performances, and the club are unlikely to regret sealing a reunion with him this summer.

Dyche has his own type of player that he wants to bring in before the end of the window, and Barkley is very different to that, in terms of work etic and defensive nous.

Man Utd Bidder Yet To Hear Back Since £5bn Takeover Offer

According to reports, Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani is yet to hear back from the Glazer family after placing his bid to buy Manchester United.

What's the latest Man United takeover news?

It's a story that has been rumbling on and on and on for months now and yet there still seems to be no definitive answer as to if and when the club will be sold, let alone who it will be sold to.

As things stand – and have stood for some time now – there are two main candidates to buy the club from the Glazers.

Both Ineos Group, led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, and Sheikh Jassim publically confirmed initial offers in February and have been working on deals ever since, with multiple bids being put on the table.

As per the Manchester Evening News, both parties made offers upwards of £5bn back in May but there doesn't appear to have been much movement since then.

Indeed, the report notes that, according to a source, there is a "real concern" the Glazers may not sell United. Sheikh Jassim's "premium" offer remains on the table and a source close to his camp said "the next steps are up to the sellers and all we can do is wait" – but as of yet, they've had no response.

After all this time, having yet to hear back from the Glazer family, it's easy to understand why Chief Manchester United writer Samuel Luckhurst added in the article: "figures involved in a possible takeover of United are becoming weary with the process".

Do the Glazers want to sell Man United?

One potential issue slowing things down is the fact that Joel and Avram may not actually be that keen to completely sell the club – despite their apparent unpopularity at Old Trafford.

Their siblings four Bryan, Edward, Darcie and Kevin seem more open to the idea but, according to a report back in February, the other two were "exploring the possibility of buying out their four siblings on the club board."

Manchester United co owners JoelGlazerandAvramGlazer

This is potentially why Ineos billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe may have the upper hand with his offer as

he is proposing to buy a majority stake in United which would leave Joel and Avram Glazer still involved, while Sheikh Jassim wants to buy the club outright (via Sky Sports).

Understandably, the slow nature of this whole saga has led to strong criticism in the media with Man United legend Gary Nevile slamming the Glazers earlier this summer when he learnt the takeover would not be completed in time for the start of the current Premier League season.

Read the latest Man United transfer news HERE…

“Embarrassing,” he said on BBC radio (via Evening Standard). “But it’s what they have done, drag everything out, it's always in their best interests.

“Fans not being updated by owners on the ownership sale is not good enough, but fitting with how they have operated for 20 years now.”

Sadly now into August, there seems to be no end in sight as this saga continues to drag on and if Sheikh Jassim doesn't hear back from the Glazers soon, you'd have to imagine he will run out of patience and move on.

Newcastle United Join Race To Sign "Phenomenal" Target

In the space of a year, Newcastle United have gone from a side associated with relegation battles to a side capable of competing at the very top of the Premier League, resulting in Champions League qualification last season.

Plenty of that improvement has been down to their impressive recruitment, splashing their new-found riches following their takeover by a Saudi-led consortium in October of 2021.

Eddie Howe has put the money to good use once again this summer, too, by welcoming the likes of Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes in recent months.

Now, the Magpies have reportedly joined the race for another potential attacking reinforcement before the summer transfer window slams shut in just a matter of days.

What's the latest Newcastle United transfer news?

So far this summer, Newcastle have welcomed a total of five new arrivals, such as Tonali, Barnes, and most recently, Lewis Hall.

Howe and co have enjoyed a summer window as they look to make it back-to-back top-four finishes in the Premier League this season. Now, as the transfer window edges closer and closer to slamming shut, Newcastle could bring one more reinforcement through the door at St James' Park.

According to The Sun's Alan Nixon, via TEAMtalk, the Magpies have joined the race to sign PSV Eindhoven winger Johan Bakayoko this summer, with Tottenham Hotspur also interested in the youngster, who could cost around £30m.

Both Spurs and Newcastle reportedly made a first move by sending scouts to watch Bakayoko in PSV's recent 2-2 draw against Rangers in the Champions League play-offs, and will do the same for the return leg, which takes place on Wednesday.

Should Newcastle United sign Johan Bakayoko?

johan-bakayoko-everton

Having built the foundations for immediate success, Newcastle would be doing themselves no harm by beginning to think about the future. And that could start with the signing of Bakayoko. There's a reason why the Belgian has attracted so much interest this summer, with the statistics speaking for themselves.

According to FBref, Bakayoko is in the top 99 percentile for progressive carries, with 7.22 per 90, the top 95 percentile for successful take-ons, making 3.07 per 90, and the top 91 percentile for shot-creating actions, with 4.97 per 90. And this is all at just 20 years of age.

So far this season, the winger has made further strides towards success, too, with four assists in six games, only increasing the interest in his immediate future around Europe.

At his best, Bakayoko has earned plenty of deserved praise, including from his agent, Gerard Witters, who told Het Nieuwsblad, via Goal:

"At the beginning of 2021, Johan was not doing well. But after he got his new contract, everything changed.

Read the latest Newcastle transfer news HERE…

"He started to boost his stats and his recent games were phenomenal. The club has told me that Johan is already better than they initially thought he would be.

"Before he sometimes played like a crazy dog. He had great qualities and was very explosive, but he produced poor crosses and took shots when they were not the best option.

"Now he knows a lot more what he's going to do and defenders can't stop him anymore, despite the fact that he always does the same movement (cutting inside)."

Fulham Open Talks To Sign Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

Fulham have now opened talks to sign Tottenham Hotspur's Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and a report has revealed whether the midfielder would be willing to make the move to Craven Cottage…

What's the latest Fulham transfer news?

There is now likely to be a major outgoing for Fulham on deadline day, with Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg recently claiming Joao Palhinha has now been given permission to fly to Germany, ahead of a move to reigning Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

A medical is yet to be booked, as more details have to be clarified, including the Cottagers' replacement, with Sky Sports' Gianluca Di Marzio now confirming they are working on a deal for Fiorentina's Sofyan Amrabat, which could amount to a total of €30m (£26m).

However, the Londoners are not the only Premier League club in the race for the central midfielder's signature, with Manchester United also in hot pursuit, and Football Insider report the Red Devils are now putting the finishing touches on a deal.

As such, Fulham may be forced to turn their attentions elsewhere, and they could stand a good chance of signing Hojbjerg, with a report from The Evening Standard revealing the midfielder would be "willing to listen" to any proposals put forward.

The 28-year-old is willing to listen to a possible move to Fulham before the transfer window slams shut because he has not started any of Tottenham's first three Premier League matches, under the helm of new manager Ange Postecoglou.

The Cottagers have opened talks to sign the Dane, who could be brought in as a replacement for Palhinha, but they may have to battle it out with La Liga giants Atletico Madrid, who are hoping Spurs lower their asking price before the 11pm deadline tonight.

Not only is the Tottenham midfielder a target for Marco Silva at this late stage in the window, but contact has also been made with several other players, including Manchester United's Scott McTominay, and AS Monaco's Youssouf Fofana, so there is no shortage of potential options.

Who has Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg played for?

The Denmark international started his career with Bayern Munich, making a total of 25 first-team appearances for the club, before spending time on loan at FC Augsburg and eventually going on to join Schalke 04, where he featured 30 times.

However, the former Bayern man truly made a name for himself in the Premier League, making 134 appearances for Southampton, and he has since gone on to become a key player for Spurs, playing every league game in the 2020-21 season.

Tottenham's Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

Although he is clearly unfancied by Postecoglou, the £102k-per-week maestro has put in some fantastic performances over the course of the past year, ranking in the 91st percentile for his pass completion rate per 90, and in the 80th percentile for interceptions, when compared to his positional peers.

Despite not being as defensively strong as Palhinha, who places in the 99th percentile for tackles, Hojbjerg is a top-quality player, having been lauded as "unbelievable" by Jamie O'Hara, and he could be the perfect replacement for the Portugal international, making this one to watch.
