Chelsea’s three-man striker transfer targets shared

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino could make a swoop for a new striker in January and has three options in mind at Stamford Bridge, according to latest reports.

What's the latest news involving Chelsea?

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, writing in his exclusive column for CaughtOffside, Manchester City asked about the possibility of signing out-of-favour Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella in the January transfer window. Giving some insight into the permutations of Manchester City's advances, Romano stated in his column:

"It is true, however, that Manchester City approached Chelsea at the beginning of January with a loan proposal for Marc Cucurella. It also included a buy option clause, not mandatory. Chelsea rejected as they wanted to keep Cucurella at the club, and since that moment, nothing else happened with Cucurella and Man City."

Recently, 90min reported that Cucurella's Chelsea teammate Ian Maatsen is being lined up as a surprise target by Manchester City, in light of uncertainty surrounding his contract at Stamford Bridge.

The Netherlands Under-21 international has less than a year left on his current contract in west London; nevertheless, Chelsea manager Pochettino will endeavour to try and keep hold of the left-back by holding talks over fresh terms.

As per Football Insider, the Blues are lining up a swoop for midfielder Habib Diarra, who is currently plying his trade at Chelsea's satellite club Strasbourg.

Wolverhampton Wanderers were also keen on bringing the French youth international to Molineux in the summer. Despite this, Chelsea intervened in the process and blocked the Old Gold from snapping the 19-year-old up and he could now move to Stamford Bridge "sooner rather than later."

Which strikers are Chelsea now looking at?

According to Give Me Sport, Brentford striker Ivan Toney and Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins are on Pochettino's radar as he looks to bolster his depth in the striking department in the January transfer window.

The report also mentions that RB Leipzig youngster Benjamin Sesko is someone who has caught the eye of Chelsea and he was also targeted by Manchester United before they eventually brought in Denmark international Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta, with Toney the primary target.

Of course, Toney is banned from playing competitively until January due to breaching FA guidelines and has been banned from training with his Brentford teammates; however, the England forward will be permitted to join in training officially again on September 17th, as cited by talkSPORT.

Watkins, on the other hand, has started the new campaign in typical potent fashion and has registered three goals and two assists in his opening six appearances for Aston Villa, as per Transfermarkt.

Arsenal were also quoted with an interest in Watkins earlier this year, though it remains to be seen whether the 27-year-old will leave Villa Park any time soon.

RB Leipzig striker Sesko has looked the part for his new employers, netting two goals in his opening three outings since joining from RB Salzburg officially earlier this year.

Chelsea would like to add to their forward options to help support the likes of Nicolas Jackson and it is clear that they have begun to ramp up their search for a new high-profile striker, making these players to watch heading into 2024.

Everton: Journalist shares daunting managerial claim ahead of Arsenal clash

Everton manager Sean Dyche is having a tough spell in charge at the moment, and journalist Paul Brown has dropped an update over his future at Goodison Park.

Is Sean Dyche under pressure at Everton?

The Englishman took charge of the Blues back in January, after the doomed reign of Frank Lampard came to an end, and he was tasked with steering them away from the Premier League relegation zone. He managed to do it, albeit by the skin of his teeth on the final day of the season, thanks to a 1-0 victory over Bournemouth at Goodison Park.

The hope was that Everton would now kick on under Dyche in 2023/24, finishing somewhere around mid-table, but the campaign has got off to a poor start. Three early defeats in a row came their way, against Fulham, Aston Villa and Wolves, before drawing 2-2 away to Sheffield United in their most recent outing, getting their first point in the process.

Next up is Sunday's visit of a strong and potentially title-challenging Arsenal side, followed by a trip to Brentford next weekend, so the Blues could struggle to pick up a first league win of the season. Dyche is clearly feeling the heat, but it remains to be seen how much his job is under threat at the moment.

Will Sean Dyche be sacked as Everton manager?

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Brown highlighted the difficulty of some of Everton's upcoming fixtures, suggesting that further defeats could really see the pressure crank up on Dyche:

"I don't think it gets any easier for Sean Dyche or Everton because the next two games do look quite daunting. I think when a lot of Everton fans looked at the fixtures to open the season, they thought this looks like quite a soft opening.

"Then they lost three games in a row and only managed to draw against Sheffield United. I think that does put some pressure on the manager. It's entirely possible that they don't get a good result from either of the next two either. That will put him under even more pressure."

There is no doubt that Dyche hasn't had the impact many Everton fans will have hoped for so far, but it is still relatively early days for him in his tenure, as he continues to bed in new signings and get his tactical ideas across to the whole squad.

The performances and results clearly haven't been good enough, and that has to change sooner rather than later, but even if the Blues lose to both Arsenal and Brentford in the next week, it may be a surprise if the manager currently found himself out of a job.

Should Everton's wait for a first victory go on for too long, however, it is only natural that the pressure would really increase, but he should be judged over the next couple of months, rather than a few matches. There were improvements in the display away to Sheffield United, and the hope from the fans will be that the performance at Bramall Lane hinted at a turnaround in fortunes for Dyche.

Celtic gifted boost as defender’s injury not as bad as first feared

With their eyes firmly fixated on retaining their Scottish Premiership crown once again, the last thing that Celtic need is any injury disruptions, especially as the Champions League also gets underway.

The Hoops haven't showed signs of slowing down when it comes to their dominance in Scotland's top flight, and already sit top of the league, four points clear of Old Firm rivals Rangers.

Last time out, Brendan Rodgers' side eased past Dundee 3-0, courtesy of goals from David Turnball, Kyogo Furuhashi, and Matt O'Riley. It was a routine victory for Celtic, but they were not without their concerns, with one key player going off injured at half-time.

What's the latest Celtic injury news?

So far this season, Celtic have been fairly unfortunate when it comes to injuries, but have masked their absences well through impressive results. As things stand, Rodgers is without Stephen Welsh, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Maik Nawrocki, Reo Hatate, and Liel Abada in what has been a frustrating time when attempting to enjoy a full squad.

One more injury blow emerged over the weekend, and when Liverpool loanee Nat Phillips was forced off at half-time against Dundee, the worst was feared.

A sign of relief would have been heard round Celtic Park today, though, as the central defender was pictured in full training ahead of the Hoops' clash against Feyenoord. With that said, Phillips looks more than ready to play a part.

Celtic will be hoping to get off to a fast start in Group E, as they look to defy the odds to reach the last 16, beating the likes of Atletico Madrid, Lazio, and Feyenoord to progression as a result. Phillips, using his experience among Europe's elite gained at Liverpool, could play a large part in that.

How has Nat Phillips performed this season?

Liverpool defender Nat Phillips.

After playing somewhat of an emergency role at Liverpool for so long, Phillips finally has his chance to impress on a consistent basis at Celtic. He finally got that opportunity last time out, too, only to be forced off at the break through injury. Getting his debut under his belt, nonetheless, he will now look to push on even further.

Statistically speaking, via FBref, Phillips has proven in the past just how valuable he can be, particularly when it comes to his work off the ball, making an average of 4.51 clearances, as well as winning over one tackle per 90.

When at his best, the defender has earned some high praise, too, including from Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who said, via The Metro after the Reds were held to a draw by Brighton & Hove Albion: "Very good, I couldn’t be more proud of the boys what they put out here today. In the first half hour we struggled with the new backline with their balls in behind because we didn’t drop at the right moment.

"We got that sorted in the first half already. Second half we had no problems with that anymore. But second half we had some problems with energy so we sat a little bit deeper. Nat Phillips played an exceptional game, honestly, so that was all good. You need in football always a little bit of luck to win a tough away game. And today we didn’t have luck so it was a draw."

Everton: Toffees rejected ‘generational’ star for £5m, now he’s worth £215m

Everton have finally come to life it seems after a torrid start to the Premier League season, as once again their lack of a striker hampered them in the opening fixtures.

Despite carving open Fulham and Wolverhampton Wanderers on numerous occasions, accumulating a 2.73 and 1.34 expected goal tally in those games respectively, the absence of Dominic Calvert-Lewin unsurprisingly proved essential.

They would lose 1-0 on both occasions, spurring Sean Dyche to act fast in the market.

Acquiring Udinese forward Beto for a whopping £30m, already this is proving to be a shrewd investment, as not only does it offer that crucial focal point up top, but also it has given the England international enough slack to return from injury better than ever.

Two goals in his last two games emphasise such success, which could now help them towards a campaign hopefully devoid of the relegation stresses of the previous two.

However, if reports are to be believed, the Toffees could have actually acquired a number nine with quality that surpasses both their current strike partnership, and the youth to dominate for the next decade.

After all, there is not a team on earth that would not jump at the opportunity to have Erling Haaland on their side nowadays.

Did Everton nearly sign Erling Haaland?

Although Calvert-Lewin has enjoyed some impressive goalscoring spells during his tenure on Merseyside, having notched 16 league goals under Carlo Ancelotti during the 2020/21 campaign, it cannot really come close to the levels reached by the Norway international ever since he burst onto the scene in Austria.

Again, whilst their new Portuguese forward's tally of ten in Serie A last season was admirable, the Manchester City man stands out above all else.

Manchester City's Erling BrautHaalandcelebrates with the match ball after the match

So, with the suggestion that he very nearly joined the Goodison Park outfit circulating, it must mark a frustrating report for the numerous managers to have been thwarted since the departure of Romelu Lukaku.

As noted by the Daily Mail, former Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson recalled a 2018 visit to Finch Farm in which he was shown a video of an 18-year-old Haaland tearing it up for his hometown club.

However, then chief executive Robert Elstone delivered a crushing blow by suggesting that the £7m commanded would have been too expensive.

To make matters worse, some haggling with the Norwegian club Molde made them willing to then sell for a reduced £5m, which was again knocked back, deemed too much for a player who would seemingly not have made an instant first-team impact.

Although that line of thought can be appreciated, it is also worth noting that, around the reported time frame of their interest in the 23-year-old, the club was spending with ridiculous freedom. Across the 2017/18 campaign, Ronald Koeman would unload a mouth-watering €203.2m (£175.77m), yet could not spare a fraction to invest in their future.

And what an investment it could have been, given how he would go on to thrive for RB Salzburg, Borussia Dortmund and now the Citizens.

In Austria he would notch 29 goals in 27 appearances, assisting a further seven, and upon moving to Germany, increase these figures even more despite the increase in standard. Improving his creativity, the hulking marksman would add 23 assists to his 86 goals, spread impressively across just 89 appearances.

He was ready to take his final step to the apex of world football, and given their steady rise alongside him, the Etihad seemed a natural fit.

However, few could possibly have predicted just how dominant the forward would instantly become, acquired for a supreme bargain reaching just £51m.

How many goals has Erling Haaland scored for Man City?

Whilst many might gawk at those ludicrous goalscoring figures across lesser divisions across Europe, it was expected that upon moving to statistically the toughest league on the continent, there could be a drop-off.

However, it could be argued that Haaland has never been so in-form, having broken all manner of records last season whilst spearheading Pep Guardiola's push for, and subsequent winning of an unprecedented treble.

Claiming the Premier League title, alongside the FA Cup and Champions League marked an unparalleled return for a debut season, made even sweeter as he would break the division's record for most goals scored in a single term.

Already across his short career in Manchester, he boasts 60 goals in just 62 appearances, with his 11 assists taking him over a goal contribution per game. Haaland always scores, and as such the words of pundit Rory Smith cannot be disputed: "Haaland's different. Haaland is a generational talent."

Unsurprisingly, his Spanish manager has rushed to laud him too, noting: "It is unbelievable how many goals he has scored – so many important goals to help us win games. He is a unique person, as a player but also the person is special. He deserved the guard of honour."

To truly emphasise the exponential growth the 26-cap ace has enjoyed over the last few years, it is worth noting where his value lies given Everton passed up that £5m opportunity only five years ago.

What is Erling Haaland's market value now?

CIES Football Observatory offers a fair estimation and unsurprisingly rates him among the most expensive players on the planet. Seemingly worth more than Bukayo Saka and Kylian Mbappe, and alongside the likes of Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior, an astounding €250m (£215m) figure has been placed on his head. Realistically, few could argue with it.

Given the goalscoring woes suffered on Merseyside in recent years, as their failure to find a natural heir to Lukaku has haunted them for so long, at last they seem to be in a good place, with Beto and Calvert-Lewin feeding off one another and pushing each other to reach new heights. Then, should one be struck down, a more than capable alternative is waiting to take the opportunity presented.

However, there is likely no striker that will come close to Haaland in this generation, and as such it will be a mistake that the Toffees are forever made to rue.

What's worse is that this is only the beginning. There is no limit to the heights he can reach and the records he will inevitably break. A true freak of nature, but deemed £5m too expensive by Everton.

Explained: Why Cameroon could be banned from international tournaments due to 'age cheating'

Cameroon could be banned from international tournaments if Wilfried Nathan Doualla is proven guilty of 'age cheating'.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Cameroon's participation in international football tournaments hangs in the balance following allegations of age fraud involving Doualla. The Cameroonian Federation, known as FECAFOOT, has taken decisive action by suspending 62 other players including Doualla – who was the youngest member of the squad for January's Africa Cup of Nations.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

The 17-year-old midfielder from Victoria United was a surprising addition to Rigobert Song's squad for the tournament held in Ivory Coast. However, FECAFOOT alleges that Doualla misrepresented his age, leading to his disqualification from participating in the Elite League's play-off games. Doualla's true age still remains undisclosed, adding to the controversy surrounding the issue.

  • WHAT VICTORIA UNITED SAID

Meanwhile, Victoria United has vehemently denied allegations of double identities involving Doualla and his teammate Nji Richmond.

"We believe that this might be an error from the Fecafoot," a club statement read. "We call on our supporters to remain calm as we have submitted the necessary documents to justify that the players do not have a double identity."

  • DID YOU KNOW?

This is not the first time Cameroon have faced scrutiny over age-related issues. In fact, it marks the third consecutive year that the nation has been embroiled in controversy surrounding age fraud. The regulations set by the Nations Cup stipulate severe consequences for such violations. If fraud or forgery is proven, the national association in question faces suspension from participating in the following two editions of AFCON. If due to an administrative error, however, the suspension will be applicable just for one edition.

Liverpool ace who Klopp sold is now outperforming Szoboszlai after leaving

Liverpool put paid to Arsenal’s hopes of staging a comeback in the Premier League title race after capitalising on their rivals’ shock home defeat against West Ham United by blowing Manchester City away at the Etihad.

Social media and punditry seemed to subscribe to the idea that Liverpool are the Champions Elect in February, but skipper Virgil van Dijk will no doubt have barked pragmatic orders at his teammates in the dressing room post-match. There’s football still ahead.

Still, Arne Slot’s side boast an 11-point leaad at the top of the table with as many matches to play. There’s an undeniable air of authority about this side, meeting challenge after challenge and coming out on top.

Dominik Szoboszlai is earning his flowers after his recent performances, but then the Hungarian has been one of the Reds’ unsung heroes all year.

Dominik Szoboszlai's amazing form in 2024/25

Jurgen Klopp coordinated a comprehensive midfield rebuild in 2023, with Szoboszlai’s £60m release clause at RB Leipzig activated in July.

He ebbed and flowed last year but has been nothing short of exemplary for the Reds this year, so consistent and influential through his energy and industrious work ethic.

Having bagged a goal and an assist against fallen City, the 23-year-old raised his haul to six goals and six assists across 35 matches in all competitions. This doesn’t seem great, but direct involvements hardly tell the tale of Szoboszlai’s brilliance.

The attacking midfielder-turned-false nine was hailed as an “absolute monster” by Liverpool content creator Asim Mahmood after his performance against Pep Guardiola’s men, awarded an 8/10 match rating by The Liverpool Echo and hailed for his all-encompassing display, excelling both offensively and with ‘defensive endeavour’.

Szoboszlai’s output could improve, but he’s still an immense player.

There is, however, a former Liverpool ten who’s vastly outperforming him in front of goal this term – his name’s Xherdan Shaqiri.

Xherdan Shaqiri's prolific season in 2024/25

Liverpool snapped Shaqiri up from Stoke City for a sharp £13.5m fee in 2018 after activating a relegation clause in the Switzerland international’s contract.

A clutch player, Shaqiri embraced his super-sub role and indeed came up trumps when whipping a delightful delivery in for Gini Wijnaldum during Liverpool’s unforgettable 4-0 victory over Barcelona in the 2018/19 Champions League semi-final, going on to lift the trophy.

He departed in 2021 taking fond memories and an appreciative fanbase’s support with him, signing for Lyon for £9.5m in 2021, marking good business from FSG.

A footballing nomad, he wound up over the pond with Chicago Fire, and having left the MLS to re-join FC Basel last summer, Shaqiri has proved that he’s still got the knack for incisive contributions, posting ten goals and 12 assists across all competitions.

This is quite the haul, standing head and shoulders above Szoboszlai’s six goals and six assists apiece for Liverpool this term, albeit with the caveat that he’s playing at a lower level.

However, the 33-year-old is also averaging just 0.2 tackles, 0.7 dribbles and 2.4 successful duels per game in the Swiss Super League, as per Sofascore, with such underlying metrics highlighting the stark contrast that would see him drifting in the outer rim of Slot’s first-team squad.

We can all agree that while Shaqiri is plying his trade prolifically in his homeland, Liverpool wouldn’t swap him in for a player of Szoboszlai’s ilk.

In fact, given the no-frills, all-efficacy graft that the Hungarian puts in, so distinctive in his role for Slot, there’s little basis for the argument that he should be swapped out for anyone across the continent right now.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Greenwood's future at Old Trafford is currently undecided, with his contract set to expire in 2025. The expiring deal – as well as his age and the footballing talent he possesses – have enticed Juventus into the potential move. Getafe are also reportedly interested in another loan for Greenwood, although United would prefer a permanent sale if he did depart this summer. Atletico Madrid are also interested in the forward, although Barcelona will not make a move for fear of a potential backlash.

The player was arrested in January 2022 on suspicion of rape and sexual assault. He was suspended by United, but saw all charges against him dropped in February 2023 – eventually paving the way for the loan move to Getafe.

  • WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

Former United goalkeeper Sergio Romero has revealed his thoughts on a potential move to Juventus for Greenwood, where he said: "I’m convinced that Mason would do well in any big team, even Juventus. A Greenwood-Vlahovic-Chiesa trident would be super.”

    WHAT NEXT FOR GREENWOOD?

For now, Greenwood will continue playing for Getafe until his loan deal expires this summer. Greenwood will next be in action after the international break, as Getafe take on Sevilla (March 30).

Spurs: Tottenham eye "incredible" star as Ange wants to "replace" two men

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou reportedly wants to "replace" two players of his players as Spurs eye a move for one "incredible" star.

Spurs' form under Postecoglou

Nobody could have envisaged such a bright start to the season for Postecoglou, nor could they guess that Spurs would be making their best start to a campaign since their double win in 1961. The Lilywhites have clinched victory in six of their opening eight league matches, remaining unbeaten over that period while sitting top of the Premier League table. Tottenham faced tough, tough tests against the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool in that time, but came through both matches unphased and undeterred.

Speaking after their 2-2 draw away to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium last month, Postecoglou heaped praise on his Tottenham squad for a growing will and desire to improve as a team.

"There's a real will and desire to become the team we want to be, which includes making sure that you're disciplined and you're buying into the team ethos and we had a really young team out there," said Postecoglou to Tottenham's official website.

"Vic, that's his first derby, Destiny, van de Ven, Pape Matar Sarr, Brennan, they're all in their early twenties, Porro, even Kulusevski is only 23, so it was a young team but just super proud of the experienced players we did have in there. Romero was outstanding, Bissouma has been brilliant all year, Maddison, and Sonny was just on a different level, not just his goals, although they were outstanding, but his work rate, his work ethic was incredible."

Who could Spurs sign in January?

Despite their electric form right now, it has been claimed that the north Londoners could move to strengthen their ranks in the new year. Indeed, one of the rumoured transfer targets is Al-Ittihad winger Jota, who could well be on the move back to Europe after very little time in Saudi Arabia.

Former Celtic stars Josip Juranovic and Jota.

There are reports that the former Celtic star is keen to reunite with his ex-boss at Tottenham (90min), and it is believed the feeling is very much mutual from Postecoglou. Now, a new report has shed light on this, with journalist Rudy Galetti sharing a Jota transfer update for Tribal Football. He says that Postecoglou's "priority" is to "replace" both Ivan Perisic and Manor Solomon on that side with another option, leading to Tottenham's interest in signing Jota next year.

Nothing is added beyond that point, but we believe Jota could be an excellent alternative to the Spurs duo. Pundit Alan Hutton, speaking last year, revealed he is a big fan of the "incredible" Portuguese.

"Jota's only 23-years-old, he's still developing," explained Hutton to Football Insider.

"He's probably only going to get better, I think he can get better. What he's done this season has been incredible, for him to come from his parent club, where he's not really been playing. Benfica are a big club in their own right but to come to another club where there's a lot of pressure, to perform at such a young age, he's stood up to that task.

“Jota's that player fans want to see. He's exciting, he takes people on, he makes things happen, he scores goals and ticks all the boxes."
