Rangers transfer claim on Veerman

Frank McAvennie has claimed that Glasgow Rangers may be making a ‘mistake’ if they end up signing Joey Veerman in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Veerman wanted

As per The Athletic, Veerman is one of the top targets for Steven Gerrard’s team to sign this summer.

However, the Dutchman feels as if he is being priced out of a move from Heerenveen, claiming that they are making it ‘very difficult’ for him by demanding a ‘crazy’ £8m (Scottish Sun).

The Latest: McAvennie on Veerman

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie, a pundit who of course played in the Scottish Premiership, has claimed that Veerman will leave, but doubts that the Ibrox faithful will be able to spend £8m on him, and added that they do not need to sign him anyway:

“The boy will leave.

“Even Celtic with their finances, will they go out and spend £8million on a player?

“I’m not sure Rangers can do that. I don’t think they have the financial strength. It could be a mistake.

“They have enough midfield players, that’s one position they don’t need to spend £8million on.

“A forward or a centre half I can understand, they are overwhelmed there.

“I don’t think the fans will be happy if they spend £8million, a huge fee, on a player who might only be a bit-part.”

The Verdict: Avoid

Having already brought in John Lundstram from Sheffield United, the Gers already have an abundance of options in the centre of midfield, and so signing Veerman, especially for £8m, would seem like a waste of money.

The 22-year-old would end up being their third-most expensive signing of all time, when really RFC should be looking to spend their money in other areas of the pitch.

Nonetheless, a deal may not easily be done anyway given the club’s stance on the player, and so Rangers should not be looking to waste their time with the new 2021/22 season fast approaching.

Everton transfer update on White

Many Everton fans have been left to buzz as a transfer update emerged on Ben White. As per The Daily Mail, the Goodison Park faithful are looking to beat Arsenal to the signature of the Brighton and Hove Albion central defender, and have held talks over a £50m deal, with an extra £5m in add-ons.£20m would be paid up front with an extra £30m spread equally over the four years, and White has been left impressed by the speed at which the Merseyside club are working at.Even though the Toffees currently have four centre-backs at their disposal in Ben Godfrey, Mason Holgate, Michael Keane and Yerry Mina, Holgate has been linked with a move away in the summer window, and White’s extra versatility means that he is equally as comfortable at playing at right-back as well as in a defensive midfield role.[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-updates-4/” title=”Everton updates! QPR dealt blow in Ryan Porteous pursuit

Queens Park Rangers have been dealt a huge blow to their hopes of bringing Ryan Porteous to the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Scottish Sun, who claim that Turkish giants Galatasaray have now entered the race for the Hibernian centre-back, with the Super Lig side believed to be preparing an offer for the 22-year-old in the coming weeks.

Porteous had previously been linked with a move to QPR, with it being reported that the Rs’ director of football Les Ferdinand had been personally scouting the £630k-rated man over the course of last season.

However, with the potential of playing Champions League football for Galatasaray next season, should the Turkish side indeed go on to make an offer for the youngster, they would very much appear to be in the driving seat for his signature.

Warburton will be gutted

Considering just how impressive Porteous was for Hibernian last year, news of Galatasaray’s interest in the defender will undoubtedly come as a gutting blow for Mark Warburton, who will be hoping to build a side capable of mounting a push for the play-offs next term over the summer.

Indeed, over his 34 Scottish Premiership appearances last season, the 22-year-old helped Hibs keep 11 clean sheets, as well as making an average of 1.5 tackles, 1.6 interceptions and winning 6.9 duels per game.

These metrics saw the £2.7k-per-week centre-back earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.01, ranking him as Jack Ross’ seventh-best performer in a Hibernian side that finished in third place in the Scottish top flight.

As such, the addition of Porteous to Warburton’s options in the centre of defence ahead of next season would have provided the 58-year-old with very impressive depth in the position, with the 22-year-old’s potential signing coming after QPR’s capture of Jordy de Wijs from Hull City.

Although, the reports would appear to suggest that Galatasaray have not firmed up their interest with a concrete offer just yet, meaning that, at present, there still remains a slither of hope regarding a deal for the man Darren McGregor dubbed a “top player.”

As of now however, Porteous may not be on his way to QPR, and Warburton will be desperately disappointed.

Mills makes Gilmour Gers prediction

Danny Mills believes Glasgow Rangers are not the best loan destination for former Ibrox starlet Billy Gilmour.

The Lowdown: Gilmour could make loan switch

Gilmour, who is a product of Rangers’ youth academy, made the move to Chelsea as a 15-year-old from Ibrox in 2017.

Now 19, he made 11 appearances for Champions League winners Chelsea last term (Transfermarkt), but he is set to go out on loan for the next campaign to gain much-needed playing experience (The Daily Mail).

Football Insider sources say the Gers will be interested in the teenager.

The Latest: Better off at Brentford

Speaking to Football Insider, Mills has suggested Gilmour would be better off with Brentford rather than with the Gers. He said:

“I think there’ll be a lot of clubs queueing up for his signature.

“He’s a very talented boy. Brentford might be looking at him, he could come in and do a very good job and is a very good player. He wouldn’t have to move either, he could stay where he is. I think that helps a young player, a bit of stability.

“He’ll have several options to where he could go. He has to make the right decision for him. Be picky, be choosy and say ‘Right Ok, I’m going to go here for the good of me and for the development of my career.’

“I think he’ll have several options because he’s a very talented player.

“If he’s going to go to a Premier League club and play regularly then it’s definitely a better option than Rangers.

“He’ll learn a lot more there than by going to the Scottish league.”

The Verdict: Premier League stay

It would be fantastic for Steven Gerrard to be able to add £9m-valued Gilmour (Transfermarkt) to his squad for the 2021/22 campaign. The Blues midfielder is clearly talented, and was even called “world-class” by Roy Keane in 2019 (via talkSPORT). At Ibrox, he could easily become a fan favourite due to his roots at the club.

Unfortunately, the Premiership lacks the quality of the Premier League. Gilmour could do with playing regularly against top-quality players to hone his talents, something which just isn’t on offer in Scotland week in week out.

Brentford would probably make more sense for Thomas Tuchel and co, in what could be a blow for Gerrard and the Gers.

AVFC: Fans react to Axel Tuanzbe update

Aston Villa have been backed to sign Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe by Football Insider pundit Paddy Kenny.

And plenty of Villa supporters have been giving their thoughts on a possible move on social media.

According to Football Insider, Villa have been handed a huge boost in their attempts to sign the 23-year-old.

Talks between the two clubs have taken place, with United willing to listen to offers for Tuanzebe, should they land a replacement this summer.

Kenny was talking to Football Insider following the update and believes Dean Smith’s side has the ‘edge’ following the defender’s Villa Park loan stint, describing it as ‘brilliant news’.

Tuanzebe helped Villa return to the Premier League back in the 2018/19 campaign, making 35 appearances in the Midlands.

Villa fans react

Birmingham Live relayed Kenny’s comments in a story and shared that on Twitter, asking fans if Villa should do a deal.

This is what these Villa fans had to say in reply, with many excited at the possibility of a deal.

“Would love this signing, strengthens the squad depth which we lacked a little last season, would be yet another player who can push others for a first team spot and get even better.”Credit: @jenko2nd”Definitely was a good player for us and will only get better”Credit: @mattys666″1000% get him back in… Top young talent. Would push Mings and Konsa + would be an incredible insurance policy. We could even go 5 at the back and allow Targett/Cash to bomb forward — gives us formational flexibility if Deano’s ever feeling brave. Like Hause but Tuanzebe >>”Credit: @ror_rjp”I’d have gone back in a heartbeat, young so fits the DS model. Would he get in above Konsa or Mings?? Definitely an upgrade on Engels but expect would be £10m+ for a squad player.”Credit: @LeeWalks77″Yes definitely a good addition to the squad better than Hause”Credit: @KevGeo2011″This feels like something that will happen as soon as United sign a CB (Varane).”Credit: @LordMillman29

Tottenham manager update on Conte

A source from Tottenham Hotspur has dropped a big update on their pursuit of Antonio Conte.

The Lowdown: Tottenham eye new manager

Following the departure of Jose Mourinho just before the 1-0 Carabao Cup final loss to Manchester City, Spurs have been looking for a new permanent manager to take them forward into next season.

Ryan Mason was only in interim charge in North London until the end of the 2020/21 term, and so now the manager search continues into the summer.

The Latest: Conte to Tottenham update

As per Football Insider, the Lilywhites are growing increasingly confident that they will appoint Antonio Conte as their next manager after some late-night discussions.

A THFC source has allegedly told the news outlet that the former Chelsea and Inter Milan coach is now the clear frontrunner for the job, and there is even hope that he could be unveiled in the next few days.

He has been offered a long-term deal and talked about personal terms for a contract worth more than £10m-a-year, in addition to a potential transfer kitty.

The Verdict: Nobody better available

There is no better manager available to Tottenham right now than Conte, and so they should be looking to take on the opportunity to hire him while it is still there.

There is no doubt that if other high-profile jobs become available, the Italian would be high on many club’s shortlists given that he is currently out of the job and boasts a very impressive CV.

Conte has just come from a Serie A title win with Inter, thus ending the domestic dominance of Juventus in the league, and has also won league titles with both the Old Lady and Chelsea (Transfermarkt).

The 51-year-old also has that added experience of managing in the Premier League, and with no attachment to any other clubs at the moment, Spurs may not get a better chance to hire a manager of his quality.

Is this Everton’s new Tim Cahill?

When you think of Everton hero Tim Cahill, plenty of memories immediately spring to mind.

The Australian had a leap so high it could disturb the solar system, a tireless attitude that could give Mo Farah a run for his money and a goal-scoring ability up there with the very best midfielders to grace the game.

Now retired, the 41-year-old was a rock of consistently for the Toffees over a period of eight years and 277 appearances.

He scored 68 times for the Merseyside outfit and has gone down as one of the most iconic players in Premier League history.

His celebration; a knock out blow to the corner flag was trademark and the way he bullied defenders inside the penalty area was truly enthralling.

When it comes to goal scoring midfielders in the top-flight of English football, there are few better.

Another player who has made a living out of running from deep with a tireless attitude to score goals is Aaron Ramsey.

The former Arsenal midfielder is now at Juventus but has been linked with a move away from Italy to Everton.

It’s thought that Italian side could sell him for around €10m-€15m (£9m-£13m) with the Toffees being offered the opportunity to snap him up this summer.

One sticking point could be the Welshman’s wages with the midfielder earning around £300k-per-week at Juve.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-everton-transfer-news-lukaku-leao-bissouma-berge-antony” title=”Read the latest Everton transfer news!”]

He might not possess the celebration or heading ability that Cahill possessed, but in terms of providing goals from midfield there are few better.

Ramsey netted 16 times in 34 matches during the course of the 2013/14 season and has regularly proven throughout his career that he can ghost into the box unopposed to score. It’s a canny nature, one that plenty of players struggle to replicate.

The 30-year-old has netted 40 goals in 262 Premier League outings but he also has the same boundless energy that Cahill brought to Everton.

Speaking in 2019 before he left Arsenal, Martin Keown said: “He continues to mature as a player and develop. He’s a real leader now in this Arsenal team.”

Keown continued: “Playing in a deeper role, as he did under Arsene Wenger – I think that’s the best role for him. If you want Ozil and him in the same team. He’s so imp to everything to do. It’s the energy – the box to box energy. He’s become an outstanding technician.”

That box to box nature is what could set him apart if he came to the Toffees, just as it did with Cahill during his time at Goodison.

He is also a big game player, popping up with three strikes in the north London derby and scoring against Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea. He also popped up with six goals and four assists in just 14 outings versus Everton.

Ramsey’s influence may not be great at Juventus but at Everton, he’d be a real stand out fixture. Carlo Ancelotti should definitely consider a move.

Howe announcement timeline corroborated

Journalist Stuart Hodge has said that a report claiming that Eddie Howe could be announced as Celtic’s new manager this week ‘sounds bang on’.

The lowdown

The Hoops have been without a permanent manager since they parted company with Neil Lennon at the end of February.

It was reported at the start of April that they were close to an agreement with former Bournemouth boss Howe, having held talks in London, and an official announcement could finally arrive this week.

Howe led Bournemouth from League Two to the Premier League, where they remained for five seasons before dropping back to the Championship last year (Transfermarkt).

The Scottish transfer window is set to open on 9 June, with Celtic looking to assemble a squad capable of overturning a 25-gap to 2020/21 champions Rangers.

The latest

Hodge corroborated the timeline outlined by the Daily Record, saying that he too was told the appointment would be made official this week.

He tweeted: “This timeline sounds bang on. Was told it’d be before the end of next week, but stock exchange needs to know first.”

The verdict

The lengthy wait for the appointment to be confirmed means that many Celtic fans may be relieved rather than excited when Howe is finally presented, but they’re getting a coach responsible for one of the most impressive achievements in recent British footballing history.

You’d like to think that he has already been privately identifying potential transfer targets, or at least areas which need upgrading, in recent weeks.

He has time to begin implementing his vision before Celtic get their campaign underway in late July, and Hodge’s remarks appear to offer an even stronger hint that Howe will already be in the job for nearly two months by then.

In other news, Danny Mills thinks a Premier League club may swoop for this Celtic star before Euro 2020.

Jurgen Klinsmann confirms Spurs Levy talk

Jurgen Klinsmann has revealed that he has spoken to Daniel Levy with regards to becoming the new Tottenham manager.

The Lowdown: Managerial search continues

Although it has now been seven weeks since Jose Mourinho was relieved of his duties at Tottenham, Levy is yet to secure a deal for the 58-year-old’s replacement.

Antonio Conte appared to be in pole position to take the reins in north London, but a deal for the Italian fell through (The Guardian).

The Latest: Klinsmann confirms Levy talk

Klinsmann, who played for Tottenham during the 1990s, has now revealed that he had a telephone conversation with Levy with regards to taking over from Mourinho. He told ESPN:

“When Spurs let go Mourinho, I had a quick phone call with Daniel Levy and he said ‘let’s see down the road what happens’, he has to clarify a lot of things. Since then I’ve had no contact anymore with Spurs. Tottenham is Tottenham, you would always listen to that situation, and for me, obviously, Tottenham is a lot more.”

The Verdict: Don’t let sentiment get in the way

Klinsmann played for Tottenham for two years across two spells and did quite well – he managed 29 goals in 56 Premier League appearances for the Lilywhites (premierleague.com). However, his managerial record leaves a lot to be desired since he retired from playing.

The 56-year-old started out as the manager of Germany, and he did lead them to the 2006 World Cup semi-finals. However, he lasted less than a year at Bayern Munich before he was sacked, while short spells at Toronto FC and Hertha Berlin sandwiched his time with the USA national side (Transfermarkt).

While the Americans reached the round of 16 at the 2014 World Cup, they failed to even participate at the next edition after a poor qualifying run for which Klinsmann was largely responsible.

Is this really the man Tottenham want to become their next manager?

In other news, Tottenham have been offered the chance to sign this Premier League star.

Bent expects Everton to axe Bernard

Former Everton striker Marcus Bent has exclusively told Football FanCast that Bernard will leave the Toffees this summer.

The Brazilian was a regular for former manager Marco Silva during his first 18 months at Goodison Park following his free transfer move from Shakhtar Donetsk, but he has slipped down the pecking since the arrival of Carlo Ancelotti.

In fact, Bernard has started just 11 Premier League games under the Italian, only three of which have come this season.

His lack of opportunities have led to speculation surrounding his future, with ex-Manchester City and West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini reportedly keen on bringing him to Real Betis to play in La Liga.

Bernard has just over 12 months remaining on his current Everton deal, and Bent informed Football FanCast that he has heard that the attacker will be moved on this summer:

“They’re basically saying that he just doesn’t have the physicality for the Premier League. He’s technical, but not physical enough, so that’s why they’re going to offload him this summer.

“Some players will play in a team with physical players or the smaller not as physical players and he’s very technical.

“So he needs someone alongside him to take the blows and punches for him to progress.”
